Defining Microsoft .NET

Microsoft .NET is a comprehensive software development environment that was introduced in 2000 as Microsoft's next-generation programming environment. Pronounced "dot net," and widely known as the Microsoft .NET Framework, it was designed to compete with the counterpart Java-based Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform.
