In some respects the portal can be thought of as a common point of entry for all users but one that gives users the ability to customize the portal to grant access to specific functions depending upon the individual or group. One of the most exciting uses of a portal is the notion of reporting and performance analysis. Rather than just giving users access to accounting functions, the portal can give users access to specific reports that are refreshed by the system on a regular basis in the background. Rather than users having to wait while a report is being compiled, the report is compiled by the system and posted on the Web site. When users want to generate the report, all they have to do is click on the icon and the report is displayed instantly. In addition to displaying reports instantly, portals can be used to generate and view performance indicators which may be no more than summaries of much longer reports. The key here is the fact that the performance indicator may have attached to it some target figure as well so users can see the target and the actual current results. Finally, users should be able to view a history of the performance indicator in graphical format so that they can see the trend which is far more important than the raw number at any point in time.
