Product Data Storage and Control Features and Functions
Product data organization and vaulting is the primary capability of the product data management area of a product lifecycle management (PLM) system. The key goals of this function is to make sure that designers, engineers, and non-engineers alike can work on product data without worrying that another person may be modifying the same object concurrently.

- Ability to store multiformat information in secure vaults
- Product information stored must be able to be edited using the original authoring tool
- Checked in information can not be modified
- Checked in information can be viewed or downloaded as read-only
- Prevent duplicate editing of managed data through check-out control
- Revision control of product information/objects
- Date effectivity of product information/objects
- Ability to view change history/audit trail
- Ability to view pending changes
- Checkout of lower level items flags parents as pending a change
- Provide the ability to view (pan, zoom, rotate and measure) item in vault without checkout
- Ability to use viewer to visualize document even if user has authoring tool available
- Vaulted product information can be stored locally
- Vaulted product information can be stored as pointers to remote data
- Users only see information they are authorized to view or edit
