Production Process Planning Features and Functions
Assembly process design addresses the development of products and processes in relation to fabricating, assembling, or disassembling the item.

Conceptual Planning
Conceptual planning is one of the earliest processes when planning production. Conceptual planning starts with a very high level view of the way a product will be produced. Conceptual planning begins to answer questions of how and where a product will be produced, what investment in capacity and capital equipment will be required, and how much the production processes will cost.

Bill of Material/MBOM
The bill of material, or manufacturing bill of material (MBOM), is a key entity in the development of manufacturing processes. The MBOM extends the product design to include the production processes, and associates processes with the materials identified in the design of the product itself.

Operation and Activity Authoring
Operation and activity authoring provides detail about the processes by which products will be fabricated, assembled, or disassembled. Information about the process, including required resources, tooling, labor, and materials are detailed, tracked, revision controlled, and communicated. Standard, best-practice operations and activities are made available to promote standardization and reuse.

Production Costing
Production costing provides the ability to determine the production cost of produced products. Early knowledge of costs can help to improve decision-making about alternative manufacturing methods, locations, and equipment. Production costing can also provide valuable feedback about the product design by identifying areas of cost that might be reduced or eliminated by changing the product design.

Production Charting
Production charting provides a foundation to visually evaluate production processes. Production charts, sometimes known as "spaghetti diagrams," are frequently used to identify potential process improvements.
