Product Data Vaulting Features and Functions
Product data organization and vaulting is a primary capability of the product data management portion of a PLM system. Product data vaulting provides an environment to manage the complex and numerous CAD and other information about parts. Key goals for this are to make sure that engineers and non-engineers alike can work on product data without worrying that another person may be modifying the same object concurrently. Without this control, engineers and others could frequently overwrite each other's work, work on the wrong revision of a design or document, or start from scratch with a design because they can't find the appropriate information quickly. Given the complexity of the file structures of a modern 3D CAD environment, Product data organization and vaulting is typically a high priority for most companies.

- Ability to store multiformat information in secure vaults
- CAD information stored must be able to be edited using the original authoring tool
- Checked in information can not be modified
- Checked in information can be viewed or downloaded as read-only
- Prevent duplicate editing of managed data through check-out control
- Revision control of product information/objects
- Date effectivity of product information/objects
- Ability to view change history/audit trail
- Ability to view pending changes
- Checkout of lower level items flags parents as pending a change
- Provide the ability to view (pan, zoom, rotate and measure) item in vault without checkout
- Ability to use viewer to visualize part even if user has authoring tool available
- Vaulted product information can be stored locally
- Vaulted product information can be stored as pointers to remote data
- Users only see information they are authorized to view or edit
