Manufacturing Process Management (MPM) Features and Functions
The Manufacturing Process Management Knowledge Base addresses the processes associated with Manufacturing Engineering, or Digital Process Design, including the design, documentation, validation, management, and communication of production processes to both internal and external entities.Manufacturing process management (MPM) is a discipline that provides better planning, design, and simulation of product processes for manufactured items. MPM focuses on developing and implementing optimal production capabilities to produce products at competitive costs. MPM covers a number of different areas, with a strong focus on the simulation of production processes, which leads to the term "digital manufacturing." Benefits of MPM include lowered costs, faster time to mass production volume, higher quality, better design for manufacturability, and many others. MPM provides the tools required by manufacturing engineers to plan and deploy optimal facilities and processes. MPM is a complementary solution to most product data management (PDM) systems, providing additional focus on the actual work required to produce the products.

Production Process Planning
Assembly process design addresses the development of products and processes in relation to fabricating, assembling, or disassembling the item. Production process planning identifies the processes by which the product will be manufactured and attempt to catch potential production problems while the processes are still being designed. Production process planning starts with a high level, conceptual view of the manufacturing process and provides more detailed information as the product design progresses.

Production Process Design and Validation
Production process design and validation takes the conceptual design of the production processes and provides additional detail required to roll the process out into production. Activities included in production process design and validation include the development of detailed work instructions to provide to plant personnel and evaluating production processes to determine their cycle times.

Production Modeling and Simulation
Production modeling and simulation takes the conceptual design of the production processes and provides the required level of detail to plan the production facility, the flow of the material through the facility, and the actions of the plant equipment. Simulation capabilities are employed to visually test the production processes with the materials and the equipment to ensure that optimal processes are being developed. Further, production modeling and simulation covers the development of detailed programming for process equipment such as robots, inspection machines, material handling equipment, and others.

Ergonomic Evaluation and Simulation
Ergonomic evaluation and simulation involves examining production processes to make sure that workers are working in productive and safe ways. Assessment involves the analysis of work to be performed to ensure that the processes are designed in a way that is safe to the user. Simulation adds the ability to view the work to be performed in context with the materials and equipment to ensure that operators will work in efficient and safe ways.
