Discount
A discount is a reduction in price from “list” or “regular retail” given to the store by suppliers or manufacturers, or by the store to its customers. The reduction in normal price is based on some percentage or dollar amount. Discounts are usually directed toward particular markets or are instituted during a particular time or season. A price reduction given by a supplier when large volumes are purchased.

Promotions involve all the ways a business tries to persuade people to buy its products and services. This may include advertising, visual merchandising, public relations (including publicity), special events, and the sales efforts of the store’s salespeople.
