Situation
JM Family Enterprises, Inc., an $11.1
billion diversified automotive corporation,
knew there had to be a more efficient
way to organize their picking, packing
and tracking systems. The warehouse
facility, overseen by JM Service Center,
JM Family's internal shared services
center, manages fulfillment of orders
for vehicle warranties, insurance forms
and marketing materials for Southeast
Toyota Distributors, LLC, the world's
largest independent distributor of
Toyota and Scion vehicles. Because of
the specific nature of these documents,
it is vital they arrive at the correct
dealership on time. For example, a
dealership based in Georgia cannot use
the same paperwork as a dealership in
another state due to variations in state
regulations.
Armed with highlighters and four
copies of orders, JM Family's accuracy
rate was high due to the hard work of
management and associates, but their
continued growth was going to require an
automated system, more sophisticated
than paper invoices and tracking
numbers stored in a file cabinet.
Originally, they decided to implement a
database to manage the warehouse's
50,000 cubic feet of inventory, but
quickly realized that this interim
solution wouldn't help JM Family
automate their processes and
meet their business growth goals.
Solution
Jeff Hall, Vice President of Corporate
and Associate Services for the JM
Service Center, assigned the manager
of warehouse operations for JM Family
the task of evaluating whether a
changeover to an all-encompassing
warehouse management system was
necessary, and once it was determined
that it was, which system to adopt.
That's not an easy task, with no fewer
than a dozen companies waiting in the
wings to show off their technology.
After more than a year of research,
including attending a technology trade
show, Cadre Technologies' Cadence
Fulfillment warehouse management
software emerged as a finalist.
Cadre representatives visited JM
Family's Jacksonville, Fla. warehouse
for three days. They worked side-byside
pulling orders with associates to
understand JM Family's unique needs
and help the company identify
opportunities to add efficiencies to its
fulfillment process.
"Cadre impressed us with their level of
research about our company and
attention to our warehouse operation,"
said Jeff Hall. "They invited our
management team to visit another
customer's warehouse to see the
Cadence fulfillment system in action."
When Cadre wrapped up the visit, they
already made small but significant
improvements. All signs were pointing
toward a smooth transition.
Result
And smooth it was. Cadre walked JM
Family through the systemimplementation
to ensure associates were comfortable
with the new process to derive maximum
value from the software. They've
implemented Cadence and a full set of
system functionality and are currently
testing the voice-directed picking
features offered by Cadence Mobile
Logistics application. Now, warehouse
associates use voice-enabled handheld
RF scanners to track inventory,
instantly updating the system with
real-time data and decreasing the
amount of paper used in the
warehouse by 80 percent.
In fact, the transition has gone so well
that the company plans to implement
Cadence at their Deerfield Beach, Fla.
warehouse. Cadence Mobile Logistics
has revolutionized JM Family's
Jacksonville warehouse operation,
increasing productivity and improving
on-time delivery to customers.
