Cloud computing has arrived. The cloud today is a viable software deployment option for many organizations. Regardless of their size or industry, organizations are seeing the increased use of cloud-based solutions owing to potential economic benefits over the short term, such as reduced operational costs, maintenance efforts, and use of information technology (IT) resources, as well as agile deployments that shorten time to production.

Of all the available cloud options and configurations, software as a service (SaaS) is quickly becoming one of the most popular software delivery models. An enterprise software solution delivered on demand can help organizations to quickly gain operational efficiencies without the need for managing complex deployments and maintaining highly technical resources.

However, several concerns have arisen regarding SaaS software solutions. Some of these relate to the ownership of the information and the availability and use of the most recent version of an application. But perhaps the most compelling issues relate to the security of the information, the system’s ability to meet business needs, and the system’s migration capabilities.

Corporate information residing in the cloud is an asset that needs to be kept safe, both from external and internal threats. SaaS offerings also need to be flexible yet powerful enough to provide a high degree of compliance with the customer’s needs. And finally, SaaS offerings should encourage effortless data migration to minimize disruptions to business activities.

UNIT4: Living in Change

Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands, UNIT4 has become a global provider of business software and services. UNIT4 has achieved a well-respected position in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) market owing to its flagship product, Agresso, an ERP suite for people-centric service organizations. The vendor delivers the product via several delivery models: on premises or via one of multiple SaaS (cloud) models: multitenant, tailored, or private cloud. In addition, customers can opt to use a delivery model as an individual organization or as a group (i.e., so-called shared services).

A key component of UNIT4’s Agresso offering, both on premises and/or as a SaaS deployment, is the focus on BLINC (Business Living IN Change) and postimplementation agility to frequent business (versus technology) changes. Through the VITA architecture that underpins Agresso, UNIT4 Agresso solutions are able to embrace change in the simplest way possible—without software coding, and often via business users (versus IT departments or external specialists). The underlying agile VITA architecture enables organizations to substantially lower costs related to business changes, minimize disruption, and speed or maximize productivity.

UNIT4 differentiates between competitors’ common claims regarding technology change and frequent business changes, such as reorganizations, organizational growth, mergers and acquisitions, compliance changes, and financial management–driven changes. The latter, frequent business change, is the reality for many organizations operating under constantly changing conditions, including local government, higher education institutions, not for profits, as well as professional services organizations such as engineering, IT services, and financial services firms.
