Actian Goes Big on Data, Acquires ParAccel

actian.pngIt seems that Actian Corporation, provider of the famous and globally used relational database called Ingres, is repositioning itself within the big data and data management space. It has just made an interesting move towards strongly increasing its presence by acquiring ParAccel, a provider of one of the fastest analytic databases on the market.

This is a major second step for Actian after having acquired Pervasive Software, a well-known predictive analytics and data integration company.

With the ParAccel acquisition, Actian is automatically putting in its pocket some very significant partners and customers across the globe: Warner Music Group, OfficeMax, MicroStrategy, and Amazon (ParAccel powers Amazon’s data warehousing offering, Redshift).

Steve Shine, chief executive officer of Actian, remarked:
Today’s software will fail to cope with complexities of big data. The Actian software portfolio, which is specifically designed to fully exploit modern hardware architectures, arms organizations with an unmatched single platform to connect to any data, analyze it at scale for relevance and take action to turn big data into business value.

Actian's big data innovations include the following:

  • Actian DataCloud: a cloud platform for managing and integrating data

  • Actian Vectorwise, Actian RushAnalytics, and ParAccel: an analytics suite that includes predictive and ad-hoc analysis as well as Hadoop-based solutions

  • Actian Action Apps: a set of business solutions to be accessed from mobile devices


Chuck Berger, chief executive officer of ParAccel, stated:
ParAccel is being used by many of the world’s leading companies [...] to set them apart from their competition through analytics. With Actian, they have immediate access to a broader portfolio of solutions to turn their data into value.

For existing users, this is an opportunity to expand their portfolios to complete their analytics frameworks. For new customers, an expanded Actian might represent an attractive alternative to the existing offerings on the market.
