Apriso Launches MPI 3.0 with Quality Intelligence Pack

In line with the theme that more knowledge is better, Dassault Systèmes recently announced general availability of Apriso’s FlexNet Manufacturing Process Intelligence (MPI) 3.0. An important update in this release is a new Intelligence Pack for Quality, which lets manufacturers analyze quality data with greater precision. This next-generation operational intelligence product from Apriso, now a part of Dassault Systèmes’ DELMIA brand, lets manufacturers better manage and execute quality programs, in real time, to address today’s key production and quality management challenges.

Manufacturers using MPI 3.0 can expand visibility into products, suppliers, machines, shifts, dates, departments, or facilities to quickly identify potential quality issues, which can then be faster contained to better manage any issues. Quality issues can include, for example, excessive scrap levels, supplier performance, product non-conformance, and process variability, and more. Containment analyses unveil the effectiveness and impact of containment activities wherever they occur, whereby one can analyze “contained” versus “held”/“released,” length and cost of containment, products and customers affected, and reason for analysis, for preventing future problems.

By compressing time to resolution, MPI 3.0 can effectively reduce the cost of quality. Apriso’s MPI 3.0 with its Quality Intelligence Pack (QIP) joins other Manufacturing Intelligence Packs available from Apriso, including Machine, Production, and Time & Labor Intelligence Packs. The latest quality pack has the following features:
  • Streamlined and accelerated quality inspections to analyze which defects are being caught, how inspection machines are performing, the extent of “test coverage,” and more, and to improve the process based on the test results statistics using histograms and capabilities indices; in addition, defect analyses illuminate where defects occur, identify root causes, and help understand the impact and appropriate resolution
  • Extended supplier quality analysis with visual dashboards to rate and compare global suppliers based on defect rates, reasons for rejects, and overall performance based on incoming inspections analysis
  • Key quality metrics monitoring: Sigma Level, Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO), Process Capability, and more
(See this video for an illustration.)

FlexNet vs. MPI

Apriso's FlexNet is a business process management (BPM) platform-based software solution that supports manufacturing and the product supply network. For its part, MPI provides reporting and analytics capabilities within the FlexNet global manufacturing platform, which manages production, quality, warehouse, maintenance, and labor processes. Together, they provide visibility into, control over, and synchronization across global manufacturing operations.

While the aforementioned Intelligence Packs within MPI can be licensed independently, one of their advantages is their reach across silos of operations. Each of these products provide out-of-the-box visibility and reporting to accelerate the implementation and analysis of critical, time-sensitive manufacturing operations through pre-configured analytics, key performance indicators (KPI), dashboards, and reports.

MPI Evolution

The best way to characterize the differences by MPI major releases would be to view MPI 1.0 as an entry point that was optimized to work at the plant level . Version 2.0 took what the vendor had learned from this first release and optimized it for global/multisite deployments . Version 3.0 is a refinement of 2.0, with the primary updates being as follow:
  • One needs MPI 3.0 to access the expanded set of quality measurements, KPIs, and analytics, to then extract greater quality intelligence about the manufacturing operations.
  • Apriso’s other Intelligence Packs (Production, Labor and Machine) have been enhanced to now enable multi-region analysis (e.g., compare On Time In Full metric by geography, such as Europe vs. North America).
  • Apriso’s Reporting Analytics Platform Data Integrator was enhanced to support an expanded list of third-party data sources, allowing data to be more readily pulled from systems other than FlexNet
Other MPI 3.0 features include expanded Microsoft Excel support to create analysis definitions that can be easily shared, improved Web-based viewer to support on-line analysis and visualization, and support for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2008 R2 (and seamless upgrade from 2008 to 2012).
