BI Portal from Enterprise Software Solutions Is Now a TEC Certified Application

Business Intelligence Portal (BI Portal) from Enterprise Software Solutions (ESS) has become part of TEC’s group of certified BI applications, and is now available for online evaluation in comparison with other BI software solutions in TEC’s Business Intelligence and Data Management Evaluation Center.

ESS, a US-based software provider with offices in Mexico, Colombia, South Africa, and Bulgaria, is the major player behind a new breed of BI and analytics solutions. The company’s BI product portfolio, of which BI Portal is part, covers an interesting set of applications called Companion for MS Analysis Services and Companion for SQL Server. These are a powerful set of tools that provide extensive monitoring and managing capabilities to organizations using Microsoft’s popular database and analysis services products.

ESS has developed a BI application with the ability to take advantage of the existing set of Microsoft BI capabilities via the accumulation of extensive expertise on the Microsoft database and analysis platform and the development of in-house functionality features to provide a central repository for all the data analysis and reporting operations of an organization.

BI Portal comprises a complete set of features for delivering BI and analytics solutions from a corporate view while ensuring the best utilization of Microsoft’s data management resources. BI Portal covers components for reporting, dashboarding, and data mining, and uses an extensive set of capabilities for working with ubiquitous office and visualization applications such as Microsoft Office and Silverlight.

The product has an extensive security reach, with a strong authentication strategy for integration with Windows and its native SQL Engine, as well as storage and performance optimization capabilities. ESS’ BI Portal focuses on providing those BI capabilities that are ideally suited to meeting the BI needs of enterprises of all sizes.

In just a couple of weeks, I’ll be providing the full certification report on ESS’ BI Portal. In that report, I’ll be reviewing some of the main features and functions provided by BI Portal, including its strengths and weaknesses, as well as an analysis of each module within TEC’s BI software research model. The report will be available for download on the TEC Certification Reports page.

In the meantime, here’s a brief overview of one of BI Portal’s key differentiating features—its predictive modeling techniques (see figure 1 below for comparison with the “average” BI product on the market according to TEC), and other BI capabilities such as reporting and analysis, analytics, data warehousing, workflow, data integration, support, and product technology features from TEC’s knowledge base.

Below is an example of some outstanding capabilities from ESS’ BI Portal such as its ability for applying predictive modeling techniques (figure 1).

A Silverlight Business Intelligence Companion for performing Web-based browsing and analysis of online analytical processing (OLAP) cubes, as well as an interesting Interactive Charts and Maps application, is just part of the wide range of functionality offered by BI Portal in support for seamless integration with Microsoft’s SQL Server for data analysis and BI deployments (see dashboard example in figure 2 below).

To achieve TEC certification, ESS completed TEC’s detailed questionnaire (download sample BI RFI templates) and delivered the formal product demonstration I’d requested. This demo let me do a trial of some features that I was particularly interested in taking a closer look at, including more than 100 features and functionality sets.

I encourage you to stay tuned for the full certification report. In the meantime, you can interactively review ESS BI Portal, in comparison with other BI software solutions, in TEC Advisor.

If you have any specific questions about the certification process for BI Portal from ESS, please leave me a comment below, and I’ll respond as soon as I can.
