Human-Machine Interaction Company Ramps Up Firewall Product Line
L. Taylor - September 1, 2000

Event Summary

Ann Arbor, Michigan based Cybernet Systems announced the expansion of its firewall product line with the launching of the NetMAX Professional Suite. The NetMAX Professional Suite is an add-on software module that adds network security, connectivity, and file and print-sharing in an all-in-one package.

Cybernet Systems, a rather diverse firewall vendor, started out as a human to machine interaction company, Cybernet's gesture recognition technology is designed to re-engineer how people interact with computers. The underlying technology observes human hand and body motions and interprets gestural signals in order to control devices. [1]

Cybernet is betting that gesture recognition technology will ultimately replace physical input devices such as keyboards, mice, and remote control devices. Gesture recognition is an excellent complement to voice recognition. If gesture and voice recognition can interoperate with information security devices, we expect Cybernet Systems to lead the way.

Market Impact

Imagine the possibilities if the administration of a firewall could be made so simple that even a junior level technician could administer it. Instead of knowing what TCP and UDP ports to block and going in and editing and updating a firewall rule set, wouldn't it be nice if you could just tell your firewall "block porn" or "block Telnet" or "allow NewYorkTimes.Com." Gesture recognition technology is a way to allow hearing-impaired individuals to use sign language to perform administrative tasks by saying "block porn" in sign language. Today administering a firewall is typically done by senior level technical staff. By making a firewall truly simple to administer, a grade-school teacher could easily control what sites were made viewable to an elementary classroom.

User Recommendations

The NetMAX Professional Suite is a product that is best suited for small to medium-sized businesses. Their firewall is based on a proxy architecture rather than a stateful packet inspection architecture. The NetMAX firewall product can run on top of the following operating systems:

  • OpenBSD

  • NetBSD

  • FreeBSD

  • Windows NT

  • Windows 2000

  • Linux

  • MacOS
