TEC is pleased to announce that the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system Infor LN (v. 10.3) by Infor is TEC Certified for discrete and engineer-to-order (ETO) manufacturing and financials.
Infor is one of the top-selling ERP software vendors worldwide, serving more than 70,000 customers, but it positions itself as a new start-up company. This philosophy gives the vendor the business agility to quickly develop and align effective strategies that address challenges in the market. The vendor cultivates this start-up culture top down, from upper management to lower-level employees and partners, enabling it to promptly introduce new products that its clients can implement quickly and use effectively.
Infor LN is built to provide companies with a strategic platform for growth and innovation. It is 1) a best-in-class operational ERP system; 2) specialized by industry to support micro-vertical suites; and 3) optimized for complex, global operations, as shown in figure 1. Infor LN is a complete business solution that supports a broad range of vertical markets including industrial manufacturing, distribution, high tech, aerospace & defense, equipment, automotive, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) service providers. Being built for these industries means that the product is especially strong in the supply chain management (SCM), manufacturing management, project lifecycle management, and service lifecycle management functional areas.

Figure 1. Infor LN as a strategic platform
Infor LN target markets and customer base speak to the product’s capabilities. The target markets are companies with the following profile:

  • Companies with $50 million (USD) in annual revenues to some of the largest companies in the world. The sweet spot for Infor LN is companies with revenues between $100 million and $1 billion (USD).
  • Those with complex organization (multi-site, multinational) and compliance requirements.
  • Businesses that do discrete manufacturing, or are project based or service oriented. Their product complexity is complex—i.e., they offer non-standard products and services.
  • Organizations looking for standard packaged software that meets their vertical needs. They want to retire custom code and interfaces.
  • Companies that have low cost to run, with strategy and process flexibility. They enable new business models and process change quickly.
  • Companies that require great global financials and an operational ERP system.

Key Product Differentiators

With its long history of supporting vertical industries like industrial manufacturing, aerospace and defense, automotive, equipment, high-tech MRO service providers, and distribution, Infor LN has developed extensive capabilities in a number of areas. Some areas where Infor LN stands out that differentiate the solution are in the highly competitive discrete manufacturing ERP solution market:

  • Enhanced user experience—Infor LN has fully embraced the Infor 10x user experience. The user experience in Infor LN has been re-imagined, applying principles of the new SoHo user experience driven by Infor’s Hook & Loop design team. A user of Infor LN can navigate down to detailed information via a number of different paths. One way is to work with Infor LN is via the Infor Ming.le™ enterprise social platform, as shown below. The second path is through desktop tiles, which represent the business function a user needs to perform—e.g., purchase requisitions, sales orders, or the customer 360-degree screen. The third way to drill into the system is via analytics, which allow drilldown all the way into the source transaction. The user has the option of working with the system by whatever mechanism he/she chooses, and he/she can freely move between these different information retrieval options across the user experience.

  • Integrated service lifecycle management helps organizations manage the increasing servitization that is impacting manufacturers in all industries, but in particular those targeted by Infor LN. The solution includes field and depot-based repair, service resource planning and scheduling, and complex configuration management—all integrated into the broader ERP suite.
  • Project lifecycle management enables organizations to manage complex, multi-year programs, enabling the accurate allocation and tracking of costs. A number of recent enhancements to the solution support more advanced contract terms and conditions, commingling of orders, supplier staged payments, and earned value management.
  • The SCM features of the solution help manage complex supply networks by providing global demand and inventory visibility, multi-level soft and hard pegging, vendor managed inventory (VMI), supplier managed inventory (SMI), and consigned inventory management.
  • Infor LN fully supports discrete and mixed-mode manufacturing, meaning that a company can run make-to-order (MTO), make-to-stock (MTS), and complex ETO manufacturing operations at the same time using Infor LN.
  • Infor LN (with European roots) was built from the ground up to run with multi-language, multi-currency, and multi-site capabilities. Infor LN streamlines compliance with support for 48 countries and 21 languages. This allows a company to run a single, global ERP instance and achieve global visibility and control.
  • Financials—As indicated by data obtained by TEC, Infor LN has extremely strong support for financials functions such as general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. The solution stands out with extensive support for cost and project cost accounting, along with complete support for the financial management of fixed assets.
As part of the certification process, TEC was given an extensive, live demonstration of Infor LN. I am currently writing the full Infor LN certification report, which will detail more of Infor LN’s background, product fit and finish, business platform support powered by Infor 10x, and key product differentiators, as well as provide a detailed functional breakdown of the product’s strengths and weaknesses using TEC’s proprietary knowledge base. The report will be available in a few weeks on the TEC Certification Reports page. You can see how Infor LN stacks up to the ERP ETO competition in much greater detail using TEC’s proprietary TEC Advisor tool now.
