There has been an influx of human capital vendor acquisitions taking place recently, with Epicor acquiring Spectrum HR, Lawson acquiring Enwisen, and Workstream’s plans to acquire an unnamed human capital provider, all in late 2010. Now, barely into our first week of the New Year, 2011 sees its first learning management acquisition with global talent and learning management vendor SumTotal Systems officially announcing yesterday its acquisition of privately-held learning vendor GeoLearning.

This strategic acquisition looks to expand the company’s growth and further solidifies SumTotal’s market leadership position in various enterprise market segments.

This is SumTotal’s second acquisition in less than four months, with the company acquiring Softscape in September 2010.

Founded in 1997 by chief executive office (CEO) Frank Russell, GeoLearning provides Web-based e-learning software and managed services to corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions to train employees around the globe. Offered as an Internet-hosted application, the company's GeoMaestro learning management system enables clients to implement large-scale online training programs. Other products include a human capital and performance management system as well as tools for virtual classrooms, reporting, and learning content management.

More than 700 organizations around the world use GeoLearning's solutions to manage enterprise learning and development. California-based SumTotal currently has offices across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, with more than 39 million users and 2,300 customers worldwide. Some of its customers include Sony Electronics, Google, and Dell—to name a few.

The acquisition provides SumTotal and GeoLearning’s current customer base with many immediate benefits including (but not limited to) the following:

  • fully integrated talent management functionality

  • established localized operations with customers deployed in 156 countries in 39 different languages

  • resource expansion across several key business units, including R&D, Services, Support, & Account Management

  • domain and subject matter expertise across 38 different verticals
