NEC to Inflate SAP Business ByDesign Tires

Those who have recently been gleefully celebrating the untimely death of the maligned SAP Business ByDesign cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) product might want to check their facts. The truth is that, as part of the SAP solution portfolio for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), SAP Business ByDesign has recently been made available on the SAP HANA in-memory platform. If the cloud ERP product’s initial underpinning technology was not up to snuff, this did not necessarily signal the product’s demise. By delivering SAP Business ByDesign on SAP HANA, SAP is instead showing an ongoing commitment to provide a single and unified platform for businesses to run more efficiently and effectively in the cloud.

A strong sign of the product’s longevity could be the recent announcement by NEC Corp. that it has entered into an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement with SAP to integrate the SAP Business ByDesign solution with its global cloud-based ERP services. The new offering, NEC Global Localization Package for SAP Business ByDesign, will leverage the cloud ERP solution from SAP and the cloud deployment capabilities from NEC to offer subsidiaries of large corporations and SMEs a solution for gaining insights into real-time enterprise-wide operations.

This OEM agreement is the first of its kind worldwide regarding SAP Business ByDesign. NEC first plans to roll out the new offering in key Southeast Asia markets. The firm plans to invest in the development of value-added localization functionalities which would be integrated with SAP Business ByDesign through the OEM agreement, with an initial focus on addressing country-specific requirements pertinent to local tax law, regulatory compliance, and business practices. NEC expects strong demand for solutions that are easy to implement for SMEs when they are seeking to expand into emerging markets.

The NEC Global Localization Package for SAP Business ByDesign is scheduled to be available globally, with an initial rollout beginning in Southeast Asia in the second quarter of 2014. The firm has the goal of achieving 300 installations in three years. NEC also plans to provide its new cloud services in several countries where the solution is already available.

In addition, the NEC Global Localization Package for SAP Business ByDesign will be promoted to the head offices of Japanese companies that have already deployed the SAP ERP application on premise or have plans to implement cloud-based ERP solutions in their smaller and overseas subsidiaries. Last but not least, NEC plans to offer customized solution packages to fulfill the requirements of other types of organizations such as government institutions and public service providers.
