NetSuite First to Add HCM to Its Cloud ERP

Some experts have long questioned whether the notion of enterprise resource planning (ERP) is complete if it doesn’t cover human resources (HR). Addressing this, NetSuite recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire TribeHR, a provider of cloud human capital management (HCM) solutions. The idea is to create the first integrated cloud ERP and HCM software suite for small to medium businesses (SMBs).

The proposed acquisition would create a single cloud solution for modern SMBs, with the ERP system to run their core business operations and a rich social HR software solution to manage employees and encourage employee involvement and collaboration. Social HR capabilities overlay all the functionality of the system, providing commenting, collaboration, and peer and public recognition tools that span the entire company.

Founded in 2009, TribeHR is a SuiteCloud Developer Network (SDN) partner with headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and more than 450 customers operating in more than 50 countries around the world. In 2013, TribeHR joined the NetSuite SDN, created the popular TribeHR SuiteApp, and now has nearly 30 joint customers with NetSuite. TribeHR also complements NetSuite's existing payroll product, NetSuite Premier Payroll Service.

Social HCM 

TribeHR is designed for a modern workforce with mobile, social, and cloud capabilities at the heart of the system. Additionally, TribeHR encompasses a suite of HCM functionality required to recruit, manage, and reward employees, including the following high-level capabilities:

  • Core HRIS (Human Resource Information System) to manage essential employee information individually and in aggregate

  • Recruiting capabilities including a social applicant tracking system (ATS) with integrations to LinkedIn and Facebook

  • Talent Management functionality featuring 360-degree feedback tools, goal management, performance appraisals, skills tracking, and values and culture tracking

Earlier this year, NetSuite announced the expansion of the SuiteCloud partner ecosystem with a number of HCM solutions, which included TribeHR. NetSuite plans to continue to partner in areas of workforce management, global payroll, and other complementary solutions to the TribeHR offering.

NetSuite plans to continue its product integration and go-to-market strategy with Oracle HCM to deliver a single integrated solution that seamlessly connects HR and finance systems for midsized customers. For large organizations where Oracle HCM is already deployed, two-tier deployments of NetSuite in smaller subsidiaries can easily connect with the corporate HR system.

It will be interested to watch whether Microsoft Dynamics joins the HCM fray in the near future. Some pundits strongly believe that Microsoft must do an acquisition to be competitive in the enterprise applications space.
