SAP—Making HANA More Attractive in the Cloud

With The Beach Boys singing "Help Me HANA" to the tune of their classic hit song “Help Me Rhonda,” SAP launched a virtual event to unveil SAP’s next steps in the evolution of the SAP HANA platform in the cloud.

The virtual event, accompanied by an official press release, and hosted by Jonathan Becher, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at SAP, and Dr. Vishal Sikka, member of the Executive Board of SAP AG, Products & Innovation, announced SAP’s next steps to expand SAP HANA’s features with new offerings as well as new purchasing and consumption options for its customer base.

SAP HANA New PaaS Offering for Application Development

Part of what was announced during this event was new offerings that will enable startups, independent software vendors (ISVs), and customers to have options to build data-driven applications in the cloud. The platform as a service (PaaS) will now offer all the in-memory computing, database, applications services, and infrastructure to design, build, deploy, and extend applications in the cloud.

The SAP HANA Cloud Platform, currently available via the SAP HANA Marketplace, will enable customers to gain access to SAP HANA and have a development platform at their disposal to develop new apps, in as little as 30 minutes, and with a subscription based contract, according to SAP via Dr. Sikka. Of course, this continues to reinforce SAP’s intention to build a complete ecosystem on top of its flagship platform HANA, which, by the way, continues its unprecedented growth, and according to SAP, generating revenues of up to 10 million dollars (USD).

SAP HANA’s New Genomic Analyzer

Another big announcement by the vendor was HANA’s new Genomic Analyzer offering. This new product, currently in the early adoption phase, is aimed at providing researchers and healthcare specialists with a real-time and personalized platform to enable them to perform fast data processing and analysis. Researchers will be able to analyze genetic variants and find patterns of variation between populations, potentially boosting discovery, treatment enhancement, and personalization of medical services.

I am surmising that as this offering evolves, more of these types of applications to address specific complex problems will emerge that will ease deployment of advanced computing solutions for different industries in need for real-time performance and analysis of large and complex data sets.

New Pricing and Consumption Models

For expanding HANA’s reach within its existing and new customer base, SAP is now releasing new pricing models for its SAP HANA Cloud platform. These will enable users to start with a base price and scale up by including add-on options as needed. By providing flexible consumption and pricing options, SAP is hoping to enable a larger number of users to explore HANA’s possibilities. And by letting them configure solutions according to their needs, the software giant aims to gain retention and loyalty via customer satisfaction. All in all, this a good strategy from SAP to extend its flexibility of choice regarding its HANA Cloud Platform.

Dr. Vishal Sikka reverberated SAP’s goals with the following comment:

Today, we are simplifying access and expanding the market reach for SAP's breakthrough SAP HANA platform. With these steps, customers and partners can experience the power of SAP HANA and build amazing applications in any way they choose to chart new frontiers in cloud-based software without compromise.

Both new pricing and offerings for application development are available through the SAP HANA Marketplace, SAP’s online application store for HANA. Offerings are available for trial, and with purchase options in sizes that range from 128 GB to 1 TB of memory on the SAP HANA Marketplace.

Additionally, the site offers users SAP Fiori apps as well as hundreds of offerings for startups and ISVs from which to choose, in line with SAP’s goal to keep building and strengthening its SAP HANA ecosystem.
