SAP Sets a Unified Vision for HANA in the Cloud

sap_logo110.pngSAP is taking fierce steps towards expanding its cloud presence. Major moves from the German software company are reshaping its approach to a market increasingly willing to move to the cloud and an increasing number of big competitors wanting to rule this market.

After having acquired Ariba and SuccessFactors, SAP is taking a logical step by taking its flagship offering HANA to the cloud.

First, in a recent announcement, SAP revealed its new offering, the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, an in-memory based platform in the cloud. Users of SAP's core business software offerings, such as SAP ERP, SAP CRM, and SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, can now have cloud-enabled capabilities like scalability and flexibility.

Dr. Vishal Sikka, member of the Executive Board of SAP AG, Technology and Innovation, remarked:
With SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, we are addressing a fundamental customer need that we have seen since we first launched HANA, customers want more and more options in how they take advantage of the value SAP HANA brings. With the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, we are delivering HANA at scale with instant value and no compromise. We are simplifying customers’ experience and expanding their choice in how they want to adopt SAP HANA, now bringing it to a massive scale for enterprise mission critical applications—and we are doing this without disruption through the cloud.

SAP will deliver the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud natively and along with its partners in an “open + us” strategy, enabling SAP and its managed service providers to offer this service worldwide.

Second, during the SAPPHIRE conference in Orlando, FL, SAP announced a unified strategy and vision for its cloud portfolio, offering users of different sizes and from different industries ways to deploy their business software platforms within cloud or hybrid structures, as well as the means to adapt to business change and empower lines of business with purpose-built cloud applications.

sapphire_now_orlando_2013_025_400pxls.pngBill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe, co-CEOs of SAP AG (shown here), said:
We are known around the world for delivering unsurpassed industry domain expertise to our customers, built up over 40 years of enterprise application leadership, and now we are offering that extensive knowledge in the cloud. Our message to customers is simple: You can have your cloud, your way in real time, with a beautiful user experience, from the trusted leader in enterprise business solutions. With the new SAP HANA Cloud Platform as the foundation for all of our offerings, we are proud to be the trusted innovator to accelerate business value in the cloud.

SAP has already gained significant momentum and attracted customers through Ariba and SuccessFactors. With the HANA Cloud Platform, SAP will deepen its presence in the cloud with other core enterprise software offerings. But it won't necessarily be easy to gain market share as other big vendors—Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM—are expanding their cloud offerings as well.
