Trimble Navigation Enforces Its Engineering And Construction Segment

Trimble Navigation is primarily known for its advanced positioning solutions and hardware, such as GPS receivers and rangefinders. The company has been developing and producing those products for years; however, a key segment of the business is linked to engineering and construction.

During the last decade Trimble acquired a number of software solutions for this industry, allowing the company to provide a complete range of products that may be required by an engineering or construction business. Among others, the products on offer are Meridian Systems' construction project management solutions, well-known 3D building information modeling (BIM) solutions from Tekla, and 3D computer aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) industries and the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industries by Plancal. Even Trimble's recent acquisition of SketchUp from Google fits the industry as a partially free, easy-to-use 3D modeling tool.

Today's announcement of the acquisition of assets of Vico Software is in line with this logic. Now Trimble will be able to add a 5D BIM offering to its already extensive software division including a 3D BIM offering. Two more directions of virtual building modeling, construction time management and building costing, are already well developed by Vico Software. The next logical step for Trimble would be the acquisition of a sixth dimension BIM technology provider—building life cycle management software that would allow the company to offer solutions meeting all the requirements from today's construction companies.
