DoubleClick points out that this is only possible when the personal identification is provided voluntarily. Opponents question whether the average surfer understands the implications of providing information.

SAP Posts Solid Q499, but Warns of Q100

The SAS Institute and International Business Machines announced a new business intelligence relationship on January 24, 2000. IBM has announced that it is refocusing its partnering efforts "to provide world-class e-business applications." The SAS Institute will provide BI expertise and leverage IBM's consultant force.

PeopleSoft Completes Acquisition of Vantive; Vantive CRM Applications Integrate with PeopleSoft and Other ERP Systems

On January 3, 2000 PeopleSoft Inc. announced it had completed its acquisition of The Vantive Corporation, the world's second-largest independent supplier of customer relationship management (CRM) solutions. The transaction was completed December 31, 1999 with the issuance of approximately 28 million shares of common stock and options to purchase common stock, and is anticipated to be accounted for as a pooling-of-interests. The acquisition of Vantive makes PeopleSoft the only enterprise software company offering a full suite of CRM products that integrate tightly with PeopleSoft and other major back-office applications.

Is Baan Clinically Dead?

On January 4, 2000 Baan, Europe's No. 2 business software company, sank deeper into trouble as its CEO resigned and it forecast a fourth quarter loss of $240 million to $250 million after restructuring. Its shares plunged over 30 percent as analysts cut recommendations on the loss-making vendor, which has yet to name a replacement for Mary Coleman, who is returning to her Silicon Valley home after taking charge only last May.

Oracle Loses Again

SAP AG has chosen SQL Server 7.0 as its strategic database for the Windows platform. The companies also will cooperate to make the Windows 2000 OS available as a platform choice for customers wishing to implement mySAP.com solutions. On the heels of the agreement to use IBM DB2 as a preferred backend database, Oracle continues to lose market share as a database in the ERP arena.
