Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Dreamforce 2010: Of Cloud Proliferation - Part 1

Dreamforce, salesforce.com’s annual user conference, has over the past several years become a highly anticipated and entertaining end-of-the-year fixture for the enterprise applications market observers (surprisingly, Dreamforce 2011 will take place in late August, and let’s see how that new timing will feel). Namely, in these prolonged times of bad economic news and

2010 aberdeen group. filetype pdf  , the overall Dreamforce 2010 theme was the cloud proliferation (and salesforce.com’s further diversification). Needless to say, this was in addition to the theme of continued growth.  Indeed, we are now talking about a $1.7 billion  cloud computing  behemoth with nearly 90,000 corporate customers, and named the second-fastest growing software company in 2010 by Fortune Magazine . Also needless to say, Benioff’s admirable philanthropy theme continues at every Dreamforce, this time based on the Read More

Wrapping Up FOSS Predictions for 2010 with a Look Back

I love end of year predictions. Whether they're right or wrong is one thing, but it's valuable to imagine various scenarios of what might happen. Taking the time to consider and connect what has happened with what might happen, opens new insights. PDF Spam-A Step Ahead of Image Spam

Research shows that between 65 and 95 percent of all e-mail is considered spam. On an individual level, spam is an annoyance more than anything else, but on a company-wide basis, spam causes significant problems—and the cost to manage it is sizeable. Spammers are always one step ahead of antispam vendors, so to combat this persistent problem, companies need a single-source product that can eliminate spam for good.

The Sum of All Malware Fears: Siemens on Stuxnet

When Stuxnet malware hit the mainstream media in September 2010, it all sounded like a plotline straight from a Tom Clancy thriller. After all, Stuxnet targeted the Siemens industrial control systems implemented at so-called “high-value infrastructure” installations in Iran. The media response was appropriately hysterical. TEC interviews Stefan Woronka, Siemens’ director of professional services, in an attempt to de-Clancify the story.
