Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

What Can Manufacturers Do in a Tough Economy? - Part II

Part I of this blog series outlined the first three suggested "winning strategies" by JDA Software Group Inc. that manufacturers (especially of consumer goods) could instantly deploy to drive up margins and protect shareholder value in the current economic climate (malaise). I also took the liberty of mapping, with the help of some current and former employees of JDA Software and former

SSA GT Beefs Up BPCS V8 Through Partnerships' Spree Part 2: Market Impact

SSA GT has mostly achieved its most imminent and important goal of enticing existing BPCS customer base to stay on their maintenance contracts. Vendors vying to be replacement solutions for the BPCS ERP system could be in for a bigger hurdle than expected.

It may seem cynical to object to SSA GT's returning to profits by severely trimming fat and milking revenue from the existing client base only; the fact that the vendor had reached its near extinction point lends its positive results more than mere a psyc Read More

Enterprise Applications--The Genesis and Future, Revisited Part Two: 1990s--Enterprise Resource Planning

Integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP) software solutions became synonymous with competitive advantage, particularly throughout the 1990's. Customers were demanding to have their products delivered when, where, and how they wanted them. Companies were therefore compelled to develop and embrace the philosophies of just in time (JIT) and closer supplier partnerships as a way to remain competitive.

articles jit  analyzed in other upcoming articles, many may rightly consider certain parts of the above definition as somewhat outdated or not all encompassing. In general, the second part of the definition holds true, given traditional ERP involves software packages that by and large automate and support the processes of the administrative, production, inventory, and product development aspects of an enterprise. Impact of the PC Further on, the cost of technology continued to plummet and the advent of the personal com Read More

Supplier Parks - Back to the Future

Enabling Security in the Software Development Life Cycle

When companies discover new security vulnerabilities, they must retrofit the affected software with an appropriate patch and fend off the wrath of customers. Each newly discovered vulnerability results in a frantic patch, halfway deployed, and potentially opens up another hole. That’s why you should address security vulnerabilities during the software development process—before you get locked into a game of catch-up.

Mistakes in Performance Management

Performance reviews are typically based on the definition of what an employee was originally hired to do. However, appraisal systems fail to address the fact that jobs change as the business environment evolves. Performance management systems should thus deal with critical focus areas rather than basic functions. Appraisal without these objectives in mind risks being a total waste of time.
