CAD-centric PLM, ERP-centric PLM, and Organic PLM: What's Right for You? - Part 1

In addition, due to their back-office systems agnosticism, these solutions seem to do well in environments with multiple ERP systems and/or multiple customized instances of ERP systems (even if they come from the same vendor and brand). Moreover, given Siemens’ automation origins and slew of related plant-level software acquisitions over the years as well as Dassault Systemes’ more

Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

Siemens PLM Analyst Conference 2014—Blending Virtual and Real Worlds—Part Two

Last week on the TEC blog, TEC's P.J. Jakovljevic looked at the main themes of the Siemens PLM Conference 2014 he recently attended, including Siemens’ “realize innovation” strategy. Here are his thoughts regarding the rest of the conference, with a look at what’s new with “catalysts” and Teamcenter, and what else can be expected from the product lifecycle management (PLM) vendor in 2014 and beyond.

Such coups are rare at that level, and CATIA continues to grow in double digits, but most likely by finding new CAD customers in industries where NX and Creo are not that active, e.g., fashion, architecture, composite materials, etc. NX and Tecnomatix users should soon benefit from the capabilities coming from LMS mechatronic simulation, Kineo robotic path optimization, and even some third-party solutions (e.g., Bentley Systems ’ point clouds).   This year the Read More

In Search of Sustainability with Dassault Systèmes

Can PLM technologies help build a more sustainable future for organizations? This article discusses the relationship between PLM and sustainable development, using major PLM vendor Dassault Systèmes as an example.

PTC Live Global 2013: All About Design for “Servitization” —Part Two

Last week on the TEC blog I talked about market shifts and technological changes that are reshaping the competitive landscape for manufacturing firms, based on PTC CEO Jim Heppelmann’s seven trends, which formed the backbone of his keynote presentation at the PTC Live Global 2013 event held in California in June. PTC Live Global also had a companion Service Exchange (formerly Servigistics Exchange

One can then decide to either make changes around these native files (via wrappers) in Creo or change them directly, but then you must save them as Creo objects. If PTC can pull this off, it would be a major breakthrough, since now companies could use Creo instead of having four different CAD systems and designers (i.e., to handle the Creo, SolidWorks, NX, and older CATIA files). Other CAD formats, say, Autodesk Inventor and CATIA V6 , will Read More

Deltek Conference Previews

In light of the company’s recent quarterly results and the upcoming Deltek Insight 2012 user conference in mid-October 2012, this Read More

How Charismatic Is Your ERP System?

While conducting “research” for another project, I stumbled across Max Weber’s notion of classification of authority, which was news to me, as is most serious Western thought. According to Weber, there are three types of authority: 1. Charismatic 2. Traditional 3. Legal Weber defined charismatic authority as being derived primarily from, well, charisma, or personal magnetism.

Process ERP vs. Discrete ERP Differentiation

People often ask us "what's the difference between process and discrete ERP?" We model both systems in such a way that they share many common components, nevertheless process manufacturing industries have unique requirements that differ from discrete manufacturing industries. Here's a rough overview of the difference. A quick definition from APICS (The Association for Operations Management

The PMO Conflict: So Much Promise, So Little Alignment

When a project management office (PMO) operates well, the impact can be extraordinary. All too often, though, the PMO doesn’t become a clear asset. In order to avoid the worst-case scenario, PMO team members often become internal advisors with marginal impact and no authority. What can be done to avoid this? And what are the keys to successful PMO implementations?

Management for Next-generation Multi-service System Networks

The history of telecommunications management is rife with examples of good technology failing to meet business requirements. Historically, while business has needed management of service definitions, technology has focused on element management, leaving a gap between what is desired and what is possible. If operational expenses are to be lowered, this gap must be closed.

Examples Of How Some Mid-Market Vendors Might Remain Within The Future Three (Dozen)? Part Three: Made2Manage Market Impact and User Recommendations

Smaller manufacturing enterprises are often more comfortable dealing with a vendor of a size and corporate culture similar to theirs. Examples of these markets can be e.g., fresh meats, dairy producers, Tier 2/3 automotive suppliers, etc. Some of these thriving Boutique Vendors will actually be conglomerates of smaller divisions or vendors with a common owner. These might even be a current mid-range vendor who specializes in a series of smaller markets or even a sub-segment of a Big Five vendor

Part Three: Made2Manage Market Impact and User Recommendations Market Impact While the ongoing consolidation frenzy is by no means the end of smaller vendors, the number of survivors is certainly limited to only a selected few dozen. Amid ongoing seismic consolidation tremors, smaller application vendors are left with only a few choices, such as going (or remaining) private albeit under a wealthy financial backer's wing Read More
