It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web
Compaq Computer Corporation, desperate to get some kind of high-end UNIX benefit from its ill-conceived acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., has announced its massive, 32-CPU capable GS series of Alpha systems. But, as was the case with Digital, Compaq marketing seems overly concerned with CPU - not system - performance.

CPU COOLERS: More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Read Comments R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Event Summary NEW YORK and LONDON, May 16, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation today announced an aggressive attack on the $32 billion high-end UNIX market with the worldwide launch of its new AlphaServer GS series systems. Targeting dot-coms as well as customers in telecommunications, high-performance technical computing, healthcare and financial services,

HP’s LT 6000r Six-CPU Server
HP has re-entered the enterprise computing race with the release of its LT 6000r, a six-CPU server with improved performance and excellent transactional price/performance.

CPU COOLERS: raise the bar on CPU density for larger rackable systems. This product is an enterprise-class machine, geared toward larger computing environments. (Hewlett-Packard also released their NetServer LH 6000 at the same time. The LH 6000 is also a six-CPU server, but is more focused on internal disk expansion than on packing a bunch of CPUs into a rack.) The NetServer LT 6000r is aimed at those users who want to increase the number of computes per square foot of floor space. As floor space becomes more

Will Intel Take a Loss on Each CPU, but Make It Up in Volume?
There are reports that Dell may buy AMD’s Spitfire chip. If the reports are true, then look for competition to produce lower prices.

CPU COOLERS: chose Intel for the CPU in its upcoming X-Box gaming console. If Intel decides to play the price-cut card, this will put a damper on Intel s profit expectations, since Dell now occupies the top position in U.S. PC sales, having passed Compaq last year. Because of the bus speed at which the Spitfire is expected to operate (200 MHz), its performance should exceed that of the Intel Celeron - the chip against which it s designed to compete. If AMD can post great performance numbers against Celeron, and keep

IBM s Four-CPU Wintel-Based Rack Servers High Performance, High Cost
IBM's four-CPU servers, the Netfinity 5500 M20 and 7000 M10, yield top notch web-focused benchmark figures, but also very high price/performance figures for mainstream applications.

CPU COOLERS: and Dell s 4U-high, four CPU systems its smallest four CPU system is twice the size of those products. Customers who need a lot of CPUs in a small space will find this a negative. Vendor Recommendations 5500 M20: The 5500 M20 is a fairly standard, middle-of-the-road system, with the exception of its unusual size. IBM should consider reducing the system chassis to 7U. Since it takes a year or so to redesign a chassis, IBM should play up the performance aspects of the 5500 (in the meantime), an area where

Embedded Linux for Handhelds
A spate of recent announcements from Lineo, Inc., Red Hat, and others concern the development of

CPU COOLERS: In addition to the CPU issues, the PDA market is pretty much owned by the Palm OS (approximately 80% share), so boasting of Windows CE compatibility is of little value for PDAs. The appliance market is fairly new, however, and presently is one of the areas where Microsoft will try to gain some market share for CE. Providing a WinCE-like Linux solution should help Linux pick up at least part of the ready-made CE market. In addition, Win CE application compatibility should buy the FOL (Friends Of Linux)

Intel Server Trends
The Intel-based server market is one of the most hotly contested segments in the industry. What are the key trends in this market, and what will they mean to users, vendors, and the products themselves?

CPU COOLERS: vendor could stick a CPU or two in a chassis, add a SCSI or RAID controller and some RAM and disk drives and Presto! now there s a server!) Consolidation also means fiercer competition between the remaining vendors. Increased competition usually results in users benefits, either through reduced pricing as vendors fight to increase market share, or through increased functionality available. On the other hand, users may now find their choices effectively limited, similar to network TV before the rise of

Intel 820 Chipset Delays Again, Again, Again…
Intel has announced further delays in its next generation of entry-level processors, once again due to problems in the 820 chipset. We are shocked, we tell you, shocked, to learn of such a thing.

MicroStrategy Manages Your Customer Relationships And Its Own
MicroStrategy has recently added CRM applications to its offerings. The company’s new CRM suite, eCRM7, will be generally available in December. MicroStrategy is also employing CRM concepts within its own organization to increase customer satisfaction.

CPU COOLERS: per seat or per CPU prices. At the MicroStrategy WebStore customers can configure and price their purchase knowing they have received the same deal as other customers. Furthermore customers can view product demonstrations, receive technical support and training, and download software documentation via the web site. By augmenting traditional direct and indirect sales channels with the web, MicroStrategy believes it can cut sales related costs out of the transaction while shortening the sales cycle. The

What’s All This Benchmark Stuff, Anyway?
Vendors love to quote benchmarks in their product literature, press releases, and any place they think someone will use the numbers to make a buying decision. But what do the benchmarks mean, and which ones really matter?

CPU COOLERS: performance figures for the CPU and CPU subsystem. Another attempt at meaningful benchmarks was FLOPS ( FL oating-point OP erations per S econd), which rated processor speed. Computer manufacturers often quoted their systems as XX megaFLOPS (MFLOPS) or YY gigaFLOPS (GFLOPS). However, as users came to realize that FLOPS is an incomplete measure of system performance, other benchmarks were developed by groups such as the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (referred to as SPEC), a consortium

Network Engines, Inc. - Double the CPUs for Web Serving
Network Engines, Inc. is a leading vendor of extremely thin rackmount servers used in the rapidly growing area of web serving. In this note, we examine the company and its outlook.

CPU COOLERS: WebEngine sets the new CPU density standard, at two CPUs per one rack height unit (1U). In a market where compute density is the Holy Grail, this sets a new standard. The next-densest current products are the eight-CPU servers (Compaq, Dell, HP) packaged in a 7U chassis - the WebEngine increases that density by 75%. NEI s offering is so compelling that IBM, not known for its densely-packaged Wintel servers, is using the WebEngine system as the basis for its Netfinity 4000R. Maintenance Processor

IBM Continues RS/6000 Performance Focus
IBM has just released benchmark results for its mid-range Unix server, the RS/6000 M80, showing it to be a top performer in transaction processing and Web serving.

CPU COOLERS: manage unexpected growth Dynamic CPU Deallocation to isolate potential processor problems and keep applications running Service processor to monitor vital signs and keep system running Multiple Benchmark Champion Since its introduction last month, the M80 has grabbed the number one spot on a number of crucial industry performance benchmarks. It scorched competitors in the SPECweb99 benchmark to become the world s fastest 8-way Web server and set new records for Java performance and scalability in the
