It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web
Compaq Computer Corporation, desperate to get some kind of high-end UNIX benefit from its ill-conceived acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., has announced its massive, 32-CPU capable GS series of Alpha systems. But, as was the case with Digital, Compaq marketing seems overly concerned with CPU - not system - performance.

CPU FAN ZALMAN: More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Read Comments R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Event Summary NEW YORK and LONDON, May 16, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation today announced an aggressive attack on the $32 billion high-end UNIX market with the worldwide launch of its new AlphaServer GS series systems. Targeting dot-coms as well as customers in telecommunications, high-performance technical computing, healthcare and financial services, th

HP’s LT 6000r Six-CPU Server
HP has re-entered the enterprise computing race with the release of its LT 6000r, a six-CPU server with improved performance and excellent transactional price/performance.

CPU FAN ZALMAN: raise the bar on CPU density for larger rackable systems. This product is an enterprise-class machine, geared toward larger computing environments. (Hewlett-Packard also released their NetServer LH 6000 at the same time. The LH 6000 is also a six-CPU server, but is more focused on internal disk expansion than on packing a bunch of CPUs into a rack.) The NetServer LT 6000r is aimed at those users who want to increase the number of computes per square foot of floor space. As floor space becomes more expen

The Advantages of Using Hardware-based TCP Fan-out for High-Performance Messaging
Multicast-based messaging systems are limited in use to point applications under very controlled conditions due to their tight coupling to the Layer 2 network, lack of management and control, and lack of robustness. This white paper explores the key disadvantages of multicast, and explains the benefits of a hardware-based solution with embedded support for point-to-point ‘unicast’ distribution and message routing.

Compaq Wins Supercomputer Contract, But Is It Enough?
Compaq recently was awarded a contract for the world’s largest supercomputer, which will use its Alpha processors. But what’s happening with their standard high-end machines?

CPU FAN ZALMAN: More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web ), with the stated goal of reaching $1 Billion in sales for the year. Another goal was to make big inroads into Internet infrastructure. Since then, its sales have been, uh, less than stunning. Current reports indicate that after the initial backlog of 200 systems, only 50 (fifty) additional systems were sold in the quarter. Compared with Sun s E10000 (255 in their first shipping quarter) and IBM s RS/6000 S80 (720 in their quarter), these are hardly impressive

AMD Athlon Debuts
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 9th - AMD today introduced the 650MHz AMD Athlon(TM) processor, the world's fastest and highest-performance microprocessor for x86 computer systems.

CPU FAN ZALMAN: performance advantages beyond raw CPU speed. Since the technology is unproven , there is an inherent risk to its success. If Athlon fails, AMD runs the risk of going down with it. The more credible the threat of Athlon is, the more likely that Intel will react strongly.

Gates Previews Pen-Based Computer
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates used Comdex to present his next hardware solution, a pen-computing tablet-sized PC code named, amazingly enough, the Tablet PC.

CPU FAN ZALMAN: been promoting its low-power-consumption CPU as being ideal for notebook computers and other mobile systems that require long battery life. In addition to the battery life issue, Crusoe utilizes Mobile Linux , a scaled-down version of the increasingly popular Linux OS, and something Transmeta calls Code Morphing software, which allows the processor to be compatible with x86-based applications. Microsoft does not expect the Tablet to ship until 2003 Market Impact This is interesting on a number of

Reconnecting with Cincom Systems
Technology Evaluation Centers (TEC) Principal Analyst P.J. Jakovljevic rediscovers Cincom Acquire and lets its product management and product marketing team have its say. Cincom executives lay out some facts, and Technology Evaluation Centers (TEC) Principal Analyst P.J. Jakovljevic discovers that Cincom Acquire isn't the old-school client-server sales product configurator he thought it was. Since about 2005, Cincom Acquire has been Web-enabled and functionally expanded to instill knowledge into sales processes (not only into engineering processes).

HP Joins the Athlon Pile-On
Hewlett-Packard announced that it will begin shipping PCs which use the Advanced Micro Devices-produced Athlon CPU.

CPU FAN ZALMAN: systems containing the Athlon CPU should be encouraged by this. It should give them enough psychological security (regarding AMD s viability) to allow them to proceed with Athlon purchases that may have been on hold. This news will not affect those users totally committed to Intel, unless they decide the time is right to consider alternative CPUs.
