Turmoil in CPU-Land
Intel announces a recall of the barely-shipping 1.13 GHz Pentium III, and AMD announces the head of its PC processor unit is 'leaving to pursue other interests'.

CPU FINDER: cases winning (relative to CPU performance). This has elevated AMD from its former me-too status to a serious contender in the Intel-architecture market. We don t envision AMD surpassing Intel any time soon (especially because of AMD s non-presence in the server market), but this stuff does make life interesting. For AMD , we envision a slight loss of momentum (as generally happens when a key person leaves), but we do not presently believe the long-term effects will hurt AMD greatly. User

Will Intel Take a Loss on Each CPU, but Make It Up in Volume?
There are reports that Dell may buy AMD’s Spitfire chip. If the reports are true, then look for competition to produce lower prices.

CPU FINDER: chose Intel for the CPU in its upcoming X-Box gaming console. If Intel decides to play the price-cut card, this will put a damper on Intel s profit expectations, since Dell now occupies the top position in U.S. PC sales, having passed Compaq last year. Because of the bus speed at which the Spitfire is expected to operate (200 MHz), its performance should exceed that of the Intel Celeron - the chip against which it s designed to compete. If AMD can post great performance numbers against Celeron, and keep

Dell s High-End Rackmount Servers - Challenging Compaq s Wintel Dominance
Dell Computer Corporation has shaken up the PC Server market, in three years moving from the #5 US market share position to a solid #2 (and #3 worldwide) - and has set its sights on #1 Compaq. This note assesses its strengths and weaknesses in the ever-growing and increasingly important rackmount server marketplace.

CPU FINDER: Customers who want significant CPU power in a small box will find the 6350 a good choice. The 6300 is better suited to high-performance and general-purpose computing, although its price/performance numbers need to improve. Dell consistently receives high reliability marks from industry surveys, which is good, since their customer service strategy is less clear than Compaq s. Because the 6300 maxes out at only eight 1.0 HDDs, the customer should consider using this point as a bargaining tool when

Network Engines, Inc. - Double the CPUs for Web Serving
Network Engines, Inc. is a leading vendor of extremely thin rackmount servers used in the rapidly growing area of web serving. In this note, we examine the company and its outlook.

CPU FINDER: WebEngine sets the new CPU density standard, at two CPUs per one rack height unit (1U). In a market where compute density is the Holy Grail, this sets a new standard. The next-densest current products are the eight-CPU servers (Compaq, Dell, HP) packaged in a 7U chassis - the WebEngine increases that density by 75%. NEI s offering is so compelling that IBM, not known for its densely-packaged Wintel servers, is using the WebEngine system as the basis for its Netfinity 4000R. Maintenance Processor

Your Guide to OS Virtualization
Your Guide to OS Virtualization. Get Free Knowledge and Other Solutions Associated with Guide to OS Virtualization. Today’s information technology (IT) organizations are dealing with the consequences of exploding infrastructure complexity. At the root of the problem is uncontrolled server sprawl—servers provisioned to support a single application. Organizations that have implemented hardware virtualization have unwittingly created a new problem: operating system (OS) sprawl. IT organizations have to find ways to address this critical challenge—today.

CPU FINDER: design create very small CPU usage overhead. Filesystem buffers/cache in memory Virtuozzo places a single instance of data and cache across the server, maximizing memory eficiency. Memory Management Virtuozzo handles memory allocation requests dynamically. Virtuozzo environments can use a lot of memory during load peaks, and users will fully beneit from running Virtuozzo on high-end servers. Applications in Virtuozzo environments can show very high peak performance. Also, when environment resource demand

Does Microsoft Have Something Against 64-Bit Processors?
More cracks appear in the Wintel duolith, as Linux appears to be the first OS “ready for prime time” on Intel’s 64-bit “Itanium” processor. Despite Microsoft’s statements to the contrary, Linux may also be the only 64-bit OS on Itanium for awhile.

Dell Updates Its Appliance Line
As part of a far-reaching strategy to grab a large share of Internet infrastructure computing, Dell has announced three new appliance server models.

CPU FINDER: Dell believes that a single-CPU system is sufficiently powerful to drive xSP-type applications, with the bottleneck being the network. IBM believes that for heavy-duty Web applications, dual-CPU systems provide a more robust and powerful infrastructure. We advise customers to test these contentions for themselves before committing large amounts of money to revamping (or building up) their infrastructure. For example, back-end loaded (e.g., calculation/processing-intense) sites might benefit more from a
