It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web
Compaq Computer Corporation, desperate to get some kind of high-end UNIX benefit from its ill-conceived acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., has announced its massive, 32-CPU capable GS series of Alpha systems. But, as was the case with Digital, Compaq marketing seems overly concerned with CPU - not system - performance.

CPU IDLE: More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Read Comments R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Event Summary NEW YORK and LONDON, May 16, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation today announced an aggressive attack on the $32 billion high-end UNIX market with the worldwide launch of its new AlphaServer GS series systems. Targeting dot-coms as well as customers in telecommunications, high-performance technical computing, healthcare and financial services,

IBM s Four-CPU Wintel-Based Rack Servers High Performance, High Cost
IBM's four-CPU servers, the Netfinity 5500 M20 and 7000 M10, yield top notch web-focused benchmark figures, but also very high price/performance figures for mainstream applications.

CPU IDLE: and Dell s 4U-high, four CPU systems its smallest four CPU system is twice the size of those products. Customers who need a lot of CPUs in a small space will find this a negative. Vendor Recommendations 5500 M20: The 5500 M20 is a fairly standard, middle-of-the-road system, with the exception of its unusual size. IBM should consider reducing the system chassis to 7U. Since it takes a year or so to redesign a chassis, IBM should play up the performance aspects of the 5500 (in the meantime), an area where

Turmoil in CPU-Land
Intel announces a recall of the barely-shipping 1.13 GHz Pentium III, and AMD announces the head of its PC processor unit is 'leaving to pursue other interests'.

CPU IDLE: cases winning (relative to CPU performance). This has elevated AMD from its former me-too status to a serious contender in the Intel-architecture market. We don t envision AMD surpassing Intel any time soon (especially because of AMD s non-presence in the server market), but this stuff does make life interesting. For AMD , we envision a slight loss of momentum (as generally happens when a key person leaves), but we do not presently believe the long-term effects will hurt AMD greatly. User

Compaq s 8-CPU Intel Servers: the New Big Iron
Compaq started shipping its eight-CPU Intel servers, the ProLiant 8000 and 8500, in late August. These are the first true eight-way Intel servers to ship.

CPU IDLE: Compaq s 8-CPU Intel Servers: the New Big Iron Compaq s 8-CPU Intel Servers: the New Big Iron R. Krause - September 1, 1999 Read Comments Product Background In late August, 1999, Compaq started shipments of its eight-CPU Intel servers, the ProLiant 8000 and 8500. The ProLiant 8X00 series is part of the next generation of Intel servers (along with offerings from Dell, HP, IBM, and others) which utilize the Profusion chipset. (This chipset allows servers to break through the previous limitation of four

Top 10 Considerations for Choosing a Server Virtualization Technology
Your Challenge: Get Decision Makers' Approval for Choosing a Server Virtualization Technology. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. The playing field for server virtualization has become much more crowded over the last few years. It can be very time-consuming to digest each vendor’s marketing materials to find the right solution for your organization. That’s why you need to be aware of the main considerations and basic differences between the technologies, to find a starting point for technology evaluation.

CPU IDLE: of hardware, from straightforward CPU chips to obscure video cards. OS virtualization technologies by definition are built on top of standard OSs and therefore automatically support all of the hardware that the OS supports making them easier to deploy with fewer conflicts. In addition to baseline hardware support, some technologies are able to leverage full hardware technology capabilities inside of virtual machines including full SMP support, 6 bit processing, up to 16 CPUs and up to 6 GB of RAM. #6.

Microsoft .NET Enablement: Analysis and Cautions
Using technologies that are intrinsically compatible should result in faster and less costly development. Thus, any application suite rewritten in the Microsoft .NET managed code framework should not have to contend with inefficiencies resulting from mixing or wrapping technologies.

CPU IDLE: specific to the current CPU instruction address. Information that must be query-able generally pertains to run-time state, such as register or stack memory contents. The necessary information is thereby encoded in a Microsoft Common Intermediate Language (MCIL or MSDIL) and associated metadata, or in symbolic information that describes all of the entry points and the constructs exposed in the MCIL (such as methods and properties) and their characteristics. The common language infrastructure (CLI)

Cooler-running Notebooks from HP, Toshiba, et al.
Recent announcements from AMD, Toshiba, and Phoenix highlight an increasing focus on extending the battery life of notebook computers.

CPU IDLE: level of the notebook s CPU. The first products to use this will be part of Sony s VAIO product line. Early testing indicated battery life extension of around 18% when running one set of tests. Market Impact Although Intel currently controls the corporate notebook market, AMD is winning in the retail space. This will help it gain a larger foothold in Corporate America. In addition to the product wins for AMD, the PowerNow! technology is another example of AMD taking the fight to Intel. Intel announced

Transmeta to Intel/AMD: Eat Our Dust
Transmeta’s CEO says his company has a five-year lead on Intel’s and AMD’s technology. Reality or hype? And does it matter?

CPU IDLE: AMD, the two leading CPU vendors in the PC marketplace. Transmeta s Crusoe CPU was announced in January. Among Crusoe s notable features is its claim of super-low power consumption, resulting in much longer battery life for notebooks and other similar battery-powered computing devices. Current notebooks usually run out of power after 3-4 hours; Transmeta claims Crusoe-based notebooks can run up to eight hours without recharging. This extended life will (theoretically) allow cross-country fliers to work

Red Hat Plays Love You, Love You Not with CPUs
Red Hat has announced the release of Alpha Deluxe, its version of Linux for computers based on Compaq’s Alpha CPU. At the same time, the company announced it would drop support for Sun’s Sparc processor.

CPU IDLE: and less on older CPU performance tests ( viz . SPECint95, SPECfp95), we ll take that bet. We understand that benchmarks are only an indicator of performance - but how will customers know how great your systems are if the only benchmarks to which they can refer have little, if anything, to do with their intended application. In effect, there is minimal Alpha presence on the desktop. That leaves the low-end server market as the means to improve volumes and thus lower system cost. That implies a natural
