It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web
Compaq Computer Corporation, desperate to get some kind of high-end UNIX benefit from its ill-conceived acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., has announced its massive, 32-CPU capable GS series of Alpha systems. But, as was the case with Digital, Compaq marketing seems overly concerned with CPU - not system - performance.

CPU INSTALLATION: More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Read Comments R. Krause - June 26, 2000 Event Summary NEW YORK and LONDON, May 16, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation today announced an aggressive attack on the $32 billion high-end UNIX market with the worldwide launch of its new AlphaServer GS series systems. Targeting dot-coms as well as customers in telecommunications, high-performance technical computing, healthcare and financial services,

HP’s LT 6000r Six-CPU Server
HP has re-entered the enterprise computing race with the release of its LT 6000r, a six-CPU server with improved performance and excellent transactional price/performance.

CPU INSTALLATION: raise the bar on CPU density for larger rackable systems. This product is an enterprise-class machine, geared toward larger computing environments. (Hewlett-Packard also released their NetServer LH 6000 at the same time. The LH 6000 is also a six-CPU server, but is more focused on internal disk expansion than on packing a bunch of CPUs into a rack.) The NetServer LT 6000r is aimed at those users who want to increase the number of computes per square foot of floor space. As floor space becomes more

IBM s Four-CPU Wintel-Based Rack Servers High Performance, High Cost
IBM's four-CPU servers, the Netfinity 5500 M20 and 7000 M10, yield top notch web-focused benchmark figures, but also very high price/performance figures for mainstream applications.

CPU INSTALLATION: and Dell s 4U-high, four CPU systems its smallest four CPU system is twice the size of those products. Customers who need a lot of CPUs in a small space will find this a negative. Vendor Recommendations 5500 M20: The 5500 M20 is a fairly standard, middle-of-the-road system, with the exception of its unusual size. IBM should consider reducing the system chassis to 7U. Since it takes a year or so to redesign a chassis, IBM should play up the performance aspects of the 5500 (in the meantime), an area where

Will Intel Take a Loss on Each CPU, but Make It Up in Volume?
There are reports that Dell may buy AMD’s Spitfire chip. If the reports are true, then look for competition to produce lower prices.

CPU INSTALLATION: chose Intel for the CPU in its upcoming X-Box gaming console. If Intel decides to play the price-cut card, this will put a damper on Intel s profit expectations, since Dell now occupies the top position in U.S. PC sales, having passed Compaq last year. Because of the bus speed at which the Spitfire is expected to operate (200 MHz), its performance should exceed that of the Intel Celeron - the chip against which it s designed to compete. If AMD can post great performance numbers against Celeron, and keep

Tape Drive Backup Warning
To make your work easier, read Tape Drive Backup Warning. Click here to download it! Tape drives and tape drive backups are expensive, time-consuming, and unreliable. Tape drives can cost from $350 to thousands of dollars (and the tapes aren’t free either). Plus, tapes are notoriously failure-prone and vulnerable to environmental degradation—and tape drive installation is expensive. Find out the other reasons why your tape backup system might not be an effective data storage and security strategy.

Finance Transformation and Routine Accounting: Enabling the Corporate Controller’s Role as a Strategic Contributor
Researchers have proven the benefits of Accounting. We bring expert advice right to you.Download our Free whitepaper. The first role of the corporate controller has been to ensure corporate financial controls and—as a distant second—make strategic business contributions. But the installation of on-premise enterprise resource planning (ERP) and accounting software meant that controllers’ roles now involve financial software know-how. To achieve financial transformation, controllers need guidance and practical strategies. Learn more.

Gateway Drops AMD
Gateway Inc. will phase out its use of CPUs from AMD.

CPU INSTALLATION: the Athlon, AMD s high-performing CPU, will also lose a valuable sales outlet at a time when it is trying to make a big push. Since Gateway owned the high-end (>$1500) home PC market in 1998 (19.9% market share vs. 15.8% for Compaq and 10.9% for Dell 2 ), this is potentially a major loss. (Presently, Gateway accounts for an estimated 5% of AMD s sales volume). In addition, this compounds AMD s cash flow problems operating losses in the last two quarters, combined with a drop in both processor sales

Compaq, Dell Announce Eight-Way Intel Servers
Compaq and Dell have announced eight-CPU Intel servers, shipping in late August/early September.

CPU INSTALLATION: their new eight-way (8 CPUs) servers, based on Intel s Profusion chipset. (HP and IBM expected to ship by the end of September.) Early performance figures show an approximate doubling of performance (relative to four-way), and a narrowing of the gap between Unix and Intel/NT servers. Market Impact This means that Intel/NT servers are starting to move into the performance band historically owned by Unix servers. As this trend continues, non-Intel servers will have a tougher time gaining customers in

Red Hat Plays Love You, Love You Not with CPUs
Red Hat has announced the release of Alpha Deluxe, its version of Linux for computers based on Compaq’s Alpha CPU. At the same time, the company announced it would drop support for Sun’s Sparc processor.

CPU INSTALLATION: and less on older CPU performance tests ( viz . SPECint95, SPECfp95), we ll take that bet. We understand that benchmarks are only an indicator of performance - but how will customers know how great your systems are if the only benchmarks to which they can refer have little, if anything, to do with their intended application. In effect, there is minimal Alpha presence on the desktop. That leaves the low-end server market as the means to improve volumes and thus lower system cost. That implies a natural
