Intel Server Trends
The Intel-based server market is one of the most hotly contested segments in the industry. What are the key trends in this market, and what will they mean to users, vendors, and the products themselves?

CUSTOM SERVER: Novell ICS, and provide customers with rough guidelines as to what their system might need for CPUs, memory, and storage. Because it is becoming more difficult for a particular server to be all things to all people we expect to see more of this sizing/tuning focus in the future. 3) Focused Functionality General The flip side of the more powerful general purpose (GP) server, such as those used for server consolidation, is the focused server, popularly referred to as the server appliance . HP’s LT 6000r Six-CPU Server
HP has re-entered the enterprise computing race with the release of its LT 6000r, a six-CPU server with improved performance and excellent transactional price/performance.

CUSTOM SERVER: not geared toward such customers as small ISPs, where a bunch of thin servers is more appropriate; nor should the 6000s be considered where server appliances are needed. The six-CPU products are strong performers, and the LT 6000r provides a high density rackmount solution for anyone needing lots of transaction processing (TP) power. In a filled two-meter rack, the LT 6000r can provide anywhere from 29% to 65% more transactions per minute, when compared to offerings from Compaq [ProLiant 6400R and

IBM Server Line Redrawn
IBM has continued its renaming binge, moving from PCs to servers.

CUSTOM SERVER: become more important. Naturally, customers who are committed to Windows (or Solaris or Netware) first, last, and always will have no use for this strength. However, the rest of the server world should pay attention to IBM s Linux products, and consider them seriously. Linux combined with IBM s strong reputation for quality and reliability will provide an alluring message for a number of customers.

Gateway Announces Server Appliances
Gateway, Inc. has announced two new Linux-based server appliances, entering a growing market with products aimed at small businesses/offices.

CUSTOM SERVER: has little effect on customers needing general-purpose (GP) servers - server appliances are too specialized to be of interest to the general market. There will also be little interest for users wanting to build up large appliance farms . For those users who have decided they need/want to have a server appliance setup, this announcement provides another vendor alternative. Branch offices may have some interest, but it begs the question of whether the company has an integrated architecture/strategy, and

Optimizing Server Infrastructure through OS Portability
Data centers are complex mixtures of legacy platforms, hardware, operating systems (OS), data, and applications. They are inflexible, costly, and difficult to manage, so instead of optimizing the current OS, users are adding new ones. By using OS Portability and streaming servers across physical or virtual infrastructures over the network, users better utilize their data centers.

Scalable NAS and SAN Storage Systems Using Melio Cluster File System With Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2
Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 is frequently deployed in small or midsize applications. And while many customers view it as an excellent small network-attached storage (NAS) solution, they often move to larger, proprietary file server appliances when their needs expand beyond its capacity. This approach, however, adds more expense and complexity. But with Sanbolic’s Melio Cluster, capacity can be added as needed.
