Compaq to Open Tru64 Unix?
In what may be an attempt to cash in on the open source OS game, Compaq is hinting it may open some parts of the source code for its Tru64 Unix operating system

digital unix  acquired when Compaq purchased Digital Equipment Corporation in 1998. Tru64 Unix presently runs on Compaq's Alpha products (including Alphaservers), and is planned to run on its NonStop Himalaya products (developed by Compaq's Tandem division). Although Himalaya servers currently are powered by processors from MIPS Technologies Inc., Compaq plans to move the product line to its own Alpha processors. Competitors to Tru64 Unix include Sun's Solaris, IBM's AIX, and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX operating systems.

Compaq and Samsung in Deal to Save Alpha

Compaq Computer Corp. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. are planning to announce Monday a preliminary agreement to spend $500 million to advance the manufacturing and marketing of Compaq's 64-bit Alpha microprocessors and computer systems.

digital unix  acquired when it purchased Digital Equipment Corp. in June 1998. Alpha chips were once hailed as a speedier alternative to Intel's microprocessors in general-purpose computers. Samsung has committed to developing technologies that will boost chip performance. Samsung is the largest supplier of 64-bit Alpha microprocessors. He said the $300 million includes Compaq's purchases of Alpha chips from Samsung during the next 12 months; an undisclosed amount that Samsung will pay for the new licensing rights; Read More

It Takes More Than a Fast CPU to Rule the Web

Compaq Computer Corporation, desperate to get some kind of high-end UNIX benefit from its ill-conceived acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp., has announced its massive, 32-CPU capable GS series of Alpha systems. But, as was the case with Digital, Compaq marketing seems overly concerned with CPU - not system - performance.

digital unix  strengths of the former Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) hardware - datacenter, high performance technical computing (HPTC), and internal infrastructure (e.g., e-mail, process management). This is not necessarily a bad thing, just a defocusing of the official Internet infrastructure effort. We are concerned that Compaq's current Alpha marketing strategy appears to be utilizing the same logic that failed DEC in the first place - to wit, an overarching focus on the need for speed . Although CPU Read More

Compaq's Alpha - Moving Toward Its Omega?

Compaq's powerful Alpha processor is reaching a crucial juncture - will Compaq expend the effort necessary for it to challenge Intel's dominance, or is it destined to become another Betamax (great technology with no market)?

digital unix  cost-effective.) Long Term Outlook Digital (and now Compaq) squandered whatever lead/advantage Alpha had over the Intel architecture. Alpha is now, and should continue to be, at most a niche player. Compaq must now expend considerable effort if it wants Alpha to be more than that. Unless significant inroads are made before Merced and McKinley ship, Alpha risks becoming another flashy-but-dying technology. With the exception of legacy VMS systems, and a relatively small number of NT systems, Alpha seems Read More

The Whitelisting of America: Security for IT

Once upon a time around 1995, the well-known American agency, the National Security Agency (NSA), decided that there was no computer operating system that was adequately secure for their needs.  In analyzing the risks, they found that while UNIX was the most secure, they needed additional protection. They looked at the industry of anti-virus protection, at problems with Trojan software, at the

Digital signatures are used to certify each module and to ensure that a replacement module is blocked from execution until a new certification rules/signature for it is registered. Selinux has been a great success, and as a result, it is used in many Unix versions and in Red Hat Linux since 2000 and in SUSE Linux since 2005. Whitelisting is proven. More recently (2008), this capability is still not present in Microsoft operating systems. As a result, third-party vendors are Read More

Product Developers Need to Shift to an All-Digital Mindset

Over the past several decades, processes to design and build cars, airplanes, and other products have typically followed a linear, sequential path. But the inefficient flow of information has frequently led to delays in product delivery. To remedy the situation, product development groups are shifting to a more holistic digital mindset using digital business models, processes, and tools. By embracing digital like never before, product developers can become fully integrated digital businesses and, therefore, well positioned to be more competitive.

digital unix  to a more holistic digital mindset using digital business models, processes, and tools. To be clear, use of digital technology, per se, is not new. In the 1990s, for example, aerospace and automotive manufacturers embraced digital tools for automated product development. What is new, however, is that product developers are increasingly strategizing and executing their product development, manufacturing, and product launches from an all-digital perspective—leveraging smarter technologies, more useful dat Read More
