Compaq to Open Tru64 Unix?
In what may be an attempt to cash in on the open source OS game, Compaq is hinting it may open some parts of the source code for its Tru64 Unix operating system

digital unix  acquired when Compaq purchased Digital Equipment Corporation in 1998. Tru64 Unix presently runs on Compaq's Alpha products (including Alphaservers), and is planned to run on its NonStop Himalaya products (developed by Compaq's Tandem division). Although Himalaya servers currently are powered by processors from MIPS Technologies Inc., Compaq plans to move the product line to its own Alpha processors. Competitors to Tru64 Unix include Sun's Solaris, IBM's AIX, and Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX operating systems. Read More...

Although CPU Read More...
Compaq's Alpha - Moving Toward Its Omega?
Compaq's powerful Alpha processor is reaching a crucial juncture - will Compaq expend the effort necessary for it to challenge Intel's dominance, or is it

digital unix  cost-effective.) Long Term Outlook Digital (and now Compaq) squandered whatever lead/advantage Alpha had over the Intel architecture. Alpha is now, and should continue to be, at most a niche player. Compaq must now expend considerable effort if it wants Alpha to be more than that. Unless significant inroads are made before Merced and McKinley ship, Alpha risks becoming another flashy-but-dying technology. With the exception of legacy VMS systems, and a relatively small number of NT systems, Alpha seems Read More...
Compaq and Samsung in Deal to Save Alpha
Compaq Computer Corp. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. are planning to announce Monday a preliminary agreement to spend $500 million to advance

Samsung has committed to developing technologies that will boost chip performance. Samsung is the largest supplier of 64-bit Alpha microprocessors. He said the $300 million includes Compaq's purchases of Alpha chips from Samsung during the next 12 months; an undisclosed amount that Samsung will pay for the new licensing rights; Read More...
