TradeStone Software STARS 2013: Retail Rocks! Part 1

While I have repeatedly met with TradeStone Software’s top executives at the company’s head office in Gloucester, Massachusetts (and elsewhere, such as at the multiple annual NRF BIG Retail Show events in New York City) and seen its software in action, 2013 was the first time that I have ever attended the company’s user conference, STARS (Simplifying Technology Around Retailers and Suppliers

At the same time, brand marketers and consumer goods manufacturers are pushing into owned retail and direct-to-consumer businesses. Everyone is playing in everyone else’s sandbox, and the destinies of all retail stakeholders are being transformed in the process. Citing a slew of retailer examples (which Read More

Enabling Product Innovation: The Roles of ERP and PLM in the Product Lifecycle

Companies are turning toward product innovation to achieve revenue growth, but to generate return on an innovation idea, the idea must be fully developed. When the concept has been fully defined, validated, and transformed into a product, it is then ready for commercial launch and execution from a sales, marketing, manufacturing, and logistics perspective.

Enabling Product Innovation Enterprise applications play a key role in supporting and improving product development and achieving these benefits. Read More

An Interview with Shoshana Zuboff and James Maxmin

Many corporations have failed the customer; they focus on transactions, rather than customers. Ann Grackin recently talked to Shoshana Zuboff and James Maxmin, co-authors of The Support Economy, Why Corporations are Failing Individuals and The Next Episode of Capitalism, who have inspiring and radical ideas, as well as a proposal for the new corporation.

This aligns the supply chain and the customer and advocacy versus adversarial relationships. Ann: Advocacy—I like the concepts in Relationship Economics'—this gets to the very heart (and pain) of many businesses in the Wal-Mart ization economy. I think Wal-Mart is not just about price' but the very concept of value. If firms don't create an environment of what you Read More

Supply Chain Portfolio 2004

Here we are in the New Year. So, what should the going forward picture be of the Supply Chain portfolio? Something old, something new, something from a service provider, something blue. OK, enough of that.

eco lens  these solutions will not become obsolete. But by their very nature they rely on the past to function. Historical data drives their models. However, these systems will be enhanced by significantly improved and more timely, accurate information, provided by systems that deliver the NOW. Big Trends for business going forward are about pure visualization of the customer, and finding ways to integrate the supply chain elements that fulfill that demand. If you think about this in the broadest sense, it spools Read More

CAD-Centric PLM, ERP-Centric PLM, and Organic PLM: What’s Right for You? - Part 2

Part 1 of this blog series started with the assertion that product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions are becoming increasingly important to enterprises, to a strategic degree. Eco-mode: Benefits and Risks of Energy-saving Modes of UPS Operation

Many newer uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) systems have an energy-saving operating mode known as “eco-mode” or by some other descriptor. Nevertheless, surveys show that few data centers actually use this mode, because of the known or anticipated side effects. Unfortunately, the marketing materials for these operating modes do not adequately explain the cost/benefit tradeoffs. This paper shows that eco-mode provides a reduction of approximately 2% in data center energy consumption and explains the various limitations and concerns that arise from eco-mode use. Situations where these operating modes are recommended and contraindicated are also described.

Are PLM and Global Sourcing Related? Duh, And How! (Part I)

A number of TEC blog posts have discussed benefits but also the inevitable caveats of white papers (including all too common vendors' self-serving marketing fluff and buzzword verbiage), and about their (un)intended audiences. These posts have even caused some heated debates with other blogging sites and experts on white papers, and I am going to stay away from all that here. My intention here

Three out of four of the respondents who currently use manual processes recognize improvements are needed, and are taking steps to improve their systems. Underscoring the magnitude of the risk is the common belief that the cost of product changes increases ten-fold each time errors move into the next development cycle, from intial design through manufacturing. Having a PLM system, particularly one that is easy Read More
