Is J. D. Edwards’ xtr@ Ordinary?
J. D. Edwards’ supply chain messaging architecture may make life easier for xtr@ users, but offers questionable benefits for collaboration partners.

EDWARDS: e-commerce at J. D. Edwards & Company, spoke on strategies for using trading communities to gain competitive advantage. One of his central themes concerned the inability of traditional ERP and supply chain planning solutions to support a collaborative business model. Schmitt contrasted these solutions with J. D. Edwards supply chain planning product, xtr@, and its underlying Distributed Object Messaging Architecture (DOMA). Although his bias is forgivable, Schmitt s example is not. It fails to meet

JD Edwards’ Alliances: Is It Too Much of a Good Thing?
Enterprise application vendor JD Edwards has forged a number of alliances since September 1999 as the company looks to expand the availability of its OneWorld product suite. While the best-of-breed approach has its merits, we believe it invariably leads to additional integration costs and complicates service & support arrangements.

EDWARDS: Enterprise application vendor JD Edwards has forged a number of alliances since September 1999 as the company looks to expand the availability of its OneWorld product suite. In a two-pronged attack, the company has secured an agreement with Andersen Consulting and extended its existing deal with IBM Global Services. How to Cope When Your Service Provider is Acquired
Challenges are aplenty when a vendor is acquired. Financial health is no longer a safe indicator to gauge a vendor's future during this mega merger era. Knowing the challenges facing big vendors, like Oracle and PeopleSoft, and their competitors can give users a negotiating edge, whether in or entering a contract.

EDWARDS: Oracle, PeopleSoft, and J.D. Edwards customers are somewhat bemused, to put it mildly, about what the new number two applications provider will offer in terms of application services and functionality. The competition is anticipating merger fallout having devised programs to woo the disenfranchised with promises of attractive, low-risk migration platforms. SAP has even gone so far as to promise to maintain the competitor s applications as customers transition to SAP alternatives (see part seven ).

Oracle s Product Future: What Can the Past Tell?
Oracle does not have a history of major acquisitions, let alone experience with the subsequent integration efforts. Run by a management team that has never maneuvered a company through a large takeover, will Oracle be capable of digesting PeopleSoft?

EDWARDS: product plans for J.D. Edwards and PeopleSoft—that Oracle never intended to give Rdb the same attention as that given to Oracle Database. Instead, it simply encouraged users to migrate. For users who chose not too, Oracle agreed to continue to support the Rdb reactionaries for ten years, in return for maintenance fees. Yet, despite continuing Rbd s development, and recently announcing a new beta Rdb release (of which, over half of the source code is reported to be new, and written under Oracle s
