Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

ERP II Demystified

As organizations prepare for their next ERP version upgrade, they find themselves trying to make sense of a new iteration that disrupts the traditional understanding and thinking about ERP. ERP II requires organizations to transform from a focus on internal resource optimization to a new focus on process integration and external collaboration. To help organizations make sense of this new iteration, we look at why ERP II has come about, how it differs from ERP, and how it promises to change the way organizations do business in the future.

Depending on the complexity of the process, the action will result in a chain of programmed Read More

The Yin and Yang of Electronic Commerce

This note identifies the major corporate functions that engage in E-Commerce activities and the kinds of information flows that result from E-Commerce activities.

flow chart examples  It shows the information flow between a business and a customer. The model is not limited to consumer commerce, however. Here's where the Yin and Yang come in. In Daoist philosophy, the Yin and Yang symbol represents the two different forces within the life force, which pervades everything in the universe. Neither can exist without the other. The parallel for E-Commerce isn't that customers and providers are complementary. Rather, it's that in E-Commerce each party can be either, and is sometimes both at Read More

The quantity of information in the world is soaring. Merely keeping up with, and storing new information is difficult enough. Analyzing it, to spot patterns and extract useful information, is harder still. Even so, this data deluge has great potential for good—as long as consumers, companies, and governments make the right choices about when to restrict the flow of data, and when to encourage it. Find out more.

Processing Complex Events (During These, oh well, Complex Times) - Part III

Part I of this blog series introduced the concept of complex event processing (CEP) and possible needs for CEP software applications. One such broad CEP platform, Progress Apama, has been offered by Progress Software Coporation after acquiring formerly independent Apama LTD in 2005. Part II then discussed Apama’s current state of affairs and its real-life deployments at companies outside its

In this arrangement, CQG hosts Apama in its environment and CQG customers can employ Apama to automatically execute trades via integration with the CQG application. Caveat: CEP Not a Cure-all But given the worldwide heightened anxiety (and even anger) due to the blazing global financial crisis, we should not expect Apama to perform miracles of total financial risk management . How to Avoid Becoming Another CMMS Implementation Failure Statistic

Anywhere from 40 to 80 percent of CMMS implementations fail to meet expectations. However, by evaluating the company's business process flow, having proper organizational structure and buy-in, you can realize the true benefits of CMMS and avoid becoming another failure statistic.

All the individual flows when combined make up the Big Picture of all the key business processes—which is really one large BPF with many branches. I try to relate it to a map of a city's road ways. You will never see a road that is not in someway attached or linked to another. The same theory applies to flows, you should never have one hanging on its own. Once you're satisfied with the flows—they should then Read More

Let the (Excess) Inventory Flow!

Because companies focus primarily on new product development and promotion, the problem of excess and obsolete inventory, once addressed, often leads to both the inventory and dollars flying out the door. There should be smarter ways of handling this problem.

The conundrum of inventory management and the notion of inventory as a necessary evil (or the asset versus liability dilemma) have long been haunting and bedazzling operations and financial and accounting managers. It is a well-known fact that managing inventory risk is about managing the cost of maintaining unnecessarily high levels of inventory against the risk of running out of stock at a crucial moment of truth (MOT) when a customer actually wants something.
