Ariba Hopes to Spark Chain Reaction
Two recent partnership announcements, with InterWorld and Siebel, reveal how E-procurement wunderkind Ariba thinks about the future of electronic purchasing.

FORD CATIA: For every GM or Ford that gets bagged in the aggressive hunt for customers (See TEC News Analysis articles: Commerce One Meets GM: Web Now Has A Really Big Parts Department November 10th, 1999 and Oracle is Word One at Ford November 11th, 1999) there are plenty of Saabs and Fiats and Toyotas and Hyndais wandering free on the plain. However, it is in the nature of chain reactions to exhibit exponential growth, so the game may get scarce sooner than anyone expects. We expect the market to leave its

N-Tier Demand Management
The classic bull-whip effect means that the further a supplier is removed from the end consumer, the worse are the fluctuations in demand that they see. This has led many to recommend an n-tier approach to demand management, where everyone gets visibility to the end-customer demand at the same time. In practice, very few companies have been able to actually realize this vision. There are some practical approaches that a few leading suppliers deep in the supply chain are have taken to successfully mitigate the bull-whip effect.

FORD CATIA: are a supplier to Ford, you would create your own forecast of demand for the whole light truck market and for Ford s share. Or a supplier to Juniper Network would forecast the whole enterprise switch market and Juniper Network s share. This way, if several major customers have aggressive forecasts, you can make your own informed opinions about whether the total market is really growing, or whether there is some double-counting going on. Formulating your own market assumptions provides the checks and balan

Commerce One Meets GM: Web Now Has A Really Big Parts Department
General Motors will use Commerce One's E-commerce systems to build a global purchasing marketplace for its buyers and suppliers.

FORD CATIA: a similar announcement by Ford and Oracle. (See TEC News Analysis article: Oracle is Word One at Ford , October 5th, 1999). Market Impact If one takes the narrow view that Commerce One and its competitors such as Ariba and Concur Technologies are selling software systems, then this is a great deal for Commerce One. We believe the correct view is quite different. What these E-commerce companies are selling is their networks. A supplier who signs up with one Commerce One network will be tied to Commerce

Pain and Gain of Integrated EDIPart Three: Other Industry Gains
Many small and medium companies find themselves under pressure to deploy the same EDI system as a major customer, making it a basic cost of doing business with the market leaders.

FORD CATIA: industry standards such as Ford MS-9000 , AIAG, Manufacturing Assembly Pilot ( MAP ), or International Automotive Sector Group ( IASG ) QS-9000 should be probed. Whether the system supports the practices and dictated standards by the big-brother trading partners (such as GM, Ford, Honda, etc.) should also be determined. Lower tier automotive suppliers in need of a plant-focused ERP system and the need to quickly and affordably get on their e-business feet will likely benefit from evaluating IQMS, Infor

Merger Mania At Its Extremes
Other than for the peculiarity of a ‘love triangle’, the merger of SynQuest, Viwlocity and Tilion might be a harbinger of SCEM’s annexation by the realm of SCM, in which case, with a similar phenomenon of ERP absorbing MRP over a decade ago, history would repeat itself.

FORD CATIA: service. Its customers include Ford Motor Company , Nissan North America , HON Industries , Simmons Company , Penske Logistics and Honda Express . Viewlocity s solutions, on the other hand, monitor supply chain execution (SCE) against the original plan, detecting deviations in time to prevent customer service disruptions and avoid costly fixes such as shipment expediting. The solution also provides recommendations for solving problems associated with these unplanned events and enables collaborative

Quote-to-order: New Ingredients in the Recipe for Success
Quote-to-order (Q2O) systems can address the increasing demand for personalized and customized products. Complex product specification, quoting, and ordering processes—as well as the software applications catering to those processes—can benefit from the use of the Web, collaboration tools, and lean thinking.

FORD CATIA: the automotive industry from Ford s 1914 Model T to today s Ford lineup and the ability for customers to even build their own cars online. To be fair, in the 1930s, the long defunct Duisenberg car manufacturer let celebrity (deep-pocketed) customers buy a unique, customized car; but the point here is that this has increasingly become a prerogative of the general population today. The coffee shop industry is another great example of creating value via mass customization. While the ordinary, corner-store
