interesting abstract words  before embarking upon this interesting yet challenging venture, organizations must assess their methodology, processes, as well as analytical maturity and willingness to undergo changes or innovate. To sum up, here’s a quote from one of Timo Elliott’s posts : The real trend this year is not the technology. It’s about helping business people make better decisions, and actually change the way companies do business. Analytics has always been about transforming business, but the recent huge changes in a

Wetmetrics

The Internet is having an identity crisis. Long regarded as a powerful tool for cost reduction and service enhancement, the Internet is falling short of its promise because of the real and perceived threat of identity theft. Financial losses and insurance costs are mounting, as organizations struggle to protect their information perimeters and improve the strength of their authentication systems to ensure that the authorized user is present during the sign-in process. The widespread use and misuse of passwords as authentication tokens is generally cited as a cause of the accelerating erosion of user confidence and the increasing incidence of identity theft. It is generally agreed that passwords are not enough. Much has been lost, however, in the race toward person-present authentication systems. While the application of passwords is fraught with risk, the introduction of complex authentication infrastructures and cumbersome end user technology has eroded usability and increased the cost of security dramatically. This paper describes a new authentication approach that retains the simplicity and low cost of passwords, while gracefully introducing as much person-present assurance as is required by the application.

What Size Is Your Business, Really?

I deal with many software professionals, technology business users, consultants, and analysts, and it is interesting to observe that everyone uses the same conventional mantras and familiar words, but often with slightly different meanings, and sometimes with totally different meanings. A good example of this is how businesses determine their size category: small, medium, or large. It appears

The Next Big Thing or Integration-The Interaction Server Part 2: Possible Solutions

Web Services is a no-brainer as a standard mechanism for providing access to enterprise applications and data; this will allow businesses to create words out of alphabet soup (ERP, SFA, CRM, EAI, EJB, COM, BFD). Nothing about Web Services, however, addresses the front-end complexity of dealing with multiple channels, such as supporting disconnected devices and asynchronous interaction models that are required by wireless and mobile connectivity.

Ask the Experts: What’s the Difference between ASP and SaaS?

This interesting question recently arrived in our Ask the Experts inbox, so I thought I’d write a brief post clarifying the difference between ASP and SaaS models.TEC’s Take on ASP and SaaS Perhaps not surprisingly, Wikipedia’s definitions for these two terms contribute to the confusion: An application service provider (ASP) is a business that provides computer-based services to

In a very interesting move in what I would call a software consumerization trend, much like the AppStore, recently Amazon launched Amazon Web Services Marketplace (AWS Marketplace). The new service from Amazon will make available a number of cloud-based software to its users. Powered by Amazon Web Services, AWS Marketplace is an online store that makes it possible for users to
