IONA Purchases Netfish Technologies (And Much, Much More)
As the last step in a long list of acquisitions, IONA Technologies has purchased Netfish Technologies, a provider of integrated XML-based B2B process collaboration solutions. This acquisition, along with six others including the Sagavista EAI technology, completes IONA’s strategy to create a Total Business Integration™ solution with the IONA Suite.

IONA ORBIX: the IONA Suite . IONA is a pioneer in the ORB and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) market with its flagship Orbix product. Baan Resurrects Multi-DimensionallyPart 4: Challenges & User Recommendations
Baan's viability is no longer an issue. Baan's rejuvenated management team has done a praiseworthy job of bringing the company back to health while concurrently unveiling a new product release that can compete with the other products in the market. Challenges however remain.

IONA ORBIX: The partnership announcement with IONA might signal that Baan OpenWorld is maturing. Baan customers may see it as the way forward for integrating the complete suite of iBaan. While previously IONA only had an adapter to Baan ERP, it has, due to customer request, built an adapter to Baan s OpenWorld. Similar partnerships with renowned EAI companies such as WebMethods, or BEA would be an additional endorsement of Baan technology that would help its traction in the market. Baan should also keep in mind its

The alliance agreement will enable IONA to build new, certified Baan adapters, allow IONA to license these new adapters and interfaces to its customers, and enable users of IONA s Orbix E2A Web Services Integration Platform to quickly and easily integrate with iBaan enterprise solutions. As an OpenWorld Network Program Alliance member, IONA will be able to provide Orbix E2A customers with

SOA as a Foundation for Applications and Infrastructure
SOA promises interoperability in the heterogeneous business world by promoting loosely-coupled architecture, reusing software, and ending vendor-dependency. However, to be viable, dominant vendors must redesign and expose the hundreds of application functions as services. How are they meeting this challenge?

IONA ORBIX: Systems WebLogic or IONA Artix , or on open-source platform, such as JBoss . (For more information, on SAP and Oracle, see SAP Bolsters NetWeaver s MDM Capabilities and Oracle Further Orchestrates Its SOA Forays ) SOA has the promise of interoperability in an increasingly global and heterogeneous business world by promoting loosely-coupled architecture and the non-intrusive reuse of software components. Such a move should do away with user dependency on vendors for enterprise applications and also allow

The SOAP Opera Progresses - Helping XML to Rule the World
An important emerging standard in the web arena, known as SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), originally developed by Microsoft, has achieved a new milestone. Since IBM joined in support for the SOAP standard with increased security, SOAP may replace DCOM, and possibly even CORBA eventually. The W3C consortium has just released a new version, 1.2, which will be widely accepted and adopted by vendors.

Enterprise Application Integration - the Latest Trend in Getting Value from Data
Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) is one of the hot-button issues in IT for the Year 2000. Information Week Research's survey of 300 technology managers showed nearly 75% of respondents said EAI is a planned project for their IT departments in the coming year. According to a survey conducted by Bank Boston, the market for EAI is expected to be $50 Billion USD by 2001. However, successful EAI requires a careful combination of a middleware framework, distributed object technologies, and custom consulting.
