Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

APICS 2009 Webcast Session 3: Lean for Materials Managers

In the forthcoming 2009 APICS International Conference and Expo, many educational tracks will be covered by industry leaders, and lean is one of them. Since we are in a global economic crisis where every manufacturer, supplier, and producer is trying to reduce cost and minimize waste while increasing production or throughput, I am particularly interested in the “lean” educational track to hear

lean production examples  important concept for a lean production environment. He explained how the increase in flow will reduce lead time and waste while increasing production. He also shed some light on a pull system , and compared the old and new logic which helps us understand and implement lean processes. Some of the other important material management topics he covered were lot sizing and interval which also leads towards reducing waste. In my opinion, Mr.Kerber should have mentioned the benefits of using Six Sigma Read More

Enhancing Lean Practices: Lean Adoption in the Industrial Machinery and Components Industry

Customer churn rates are higher than ever: although businesses say they are devoted to loyalty, their management systems and budgets do not support that claim. But in a landscape of similar products, cutting down on defection—or churn—is vital. There are in fact four steps to improving loyalty and retention which, if focused on the appropriate customers, will improve profitability.

In the automotive, aerospace, and a growing number of other industry sectors, going Lean is a requirement for doing business; it is mandated by OEMs and major aircraft companies. Also industries that ultimately serve the consumer have seen new demands over the past few years; in many cases expected delivery times dropped radically from weeks to days and in Read More

The Next R(E)volution of Lean

By seeing a business as a "value system" for customers, companies can shift lean strategic priorities towards growth-oriented targets instead of cost-cutting. Instead of squeezing additional margins to boost the bottom line, lean philosophy can increase demand response and sales, while maintaining and lowering cost per unit—thus enabling lower prices, a competitive edge, and more business.

Begin at the End: A Good Lean Strategy Starts with Defining Your Ultimate Goal

You know the statistics—lean can shorten your lead times, reduce inventories, cut operating costs, free up resources, and more. But countless surveys have confirmed that most lean initiatives fail to deliver expected and needed results. Why? Are successes confined to a restricted list of industry sectors? Are only "lean experts" capable of leading an organization through a successful implementation?

Promises Kept: Creating Flexible Production Schedules Without Sacrificing On-Time Delivery

For manufacturers, production strategies focused on resource utilization, flexible scheduling, and the usage of supporting ERP data mean that promises will be kept, suppliers will be happy, and customer expectations will continue to be met. This paper gives best practices for unlocking the full power of ERP in confronting and overcoming unrealistic delivery dates, and demonstrates the benefits that can be realized from “sticking to your guns”, including efficiency, profitability, and success.

Lean Operations: Software Strategies for Manufacturing's New Normal

Throughout the 2000s, manufacturers were giving up on Lean. A “build it and we can sell it” attitude was adopted. Manufacturers responded to the 2008 economic collapse with aggressive cuts to inventory and head count. The worst is over. This research examines what’s changed and how to intelligently ramp up production and inventory, with an eye towards recapturing core Lean principles while also adopting a new technology.
