Has SAP Nailed Plant Level Leadership with Lighthammer?
The acquisition of the formerly loyal composite applications partner Lighthammer bolsters SAP's capabilities of connectivity and visibility into manufacturing plant performance. However, it does not, at this stage, provide much added industry-specific shop-floor functionality per se.

LIGHTHAMMER: the enterprise by acquiring Lighthammer Software Development Corporation ( http://www.lighthammer.com ), a privately-held supplier of enterprise manufacturing intelligence and collaborative manufacturing software, based in Exton, Pennsylvania (US). Lighthammer and SAP shared a vision of adaptive business networks (ABN), as illustrated by their longstanding partnership, during which Lighthammer was a premier SAP Powered by NetWeaver and SAP xApps partner. The company s approximately sixty employees have

SAP NetWeaver Background, Direction, and User Recommendations
SAP is using NetWeaver to reach to the shop floor by aggregating and presenting information to users, thus empowering them to improve manufacturing performance. It is also addressing concerns about the lack of standards for interoperability between various systems.

LIGHTHAMMER: how its recently acquired Lighthammer technology will be integrated into the NetWeaver stack (beyond now being part of SAP xMII), how it will be licensed to other software vendors and SAP customers (i.e., whether it will be a central piece, or the independent business units can dictate their own rules), and how its lack of a persistent data model for multiple industries will be addressed down the track. In other words, the role of SAP xMII relative to SAP NetWeaver and its partners solutions needs

Supply Chain Shorts for the Week of June 17, 2013 » The TEC Blog
into Frank Platt, formerly of Lighthammer , now with  SAP  (which acquired Lighthammer in 2005) during a recent 2-day visit to SAP for industry briefings. Frank talked about, among other things, how most of SAP’s manufacturing solution will be on  HANA  by the end of the year. We will have more to say about our SAP trip shortly on the TEC blog. Camstar Manufacturing execution system (MES) vendor  Camstar  has announced its  2014 conference , which means it cannot be too early to put this onto

QAD Pulling Through, Patiently But PassionatelyPart Two: Company Background
QAD, a notable player in the upper middle of the discrete manufacturing market, embarked a few years ago on reinventing itself by delivering applications that would optimize complex order fulfillment processes across multiple enterprises and divisions. Another major product enhancement feat at the time was the QAD/Connects architecture, which was both an open architecture concept and a set of connectivity tools.

SAP Q3 Results Cause Mixed Reactions
On October 19, SAP announced its results for Q3 2000, in which revenues rose 27% and net income increased 96% over the same period last year. However, bear in mind that SAP’s export figures have been bloated to a degree by currency effects, namely a recent favorable exchange rate between dollars and Euros . Even without that effect, 17% revenue growth in the US is much less compared to recent reports from its direct competitors, which should indicate a possible loss of market share.

SAP for the Chemicals Industry: Challenges and User Recommendations
Using the SAP ERP Chemicals Packaged Solution may represent a significant advantage—but only if SAP is the right enterprise resource planning system for the prospective user company, and if the prepackaged business processes are a suitable fit.

LIGHTHAMMER: customers between SAP and Lighthammer (prior to the acquisition), and about twenty shared customers with Vendavo , it is obvious that customers are amenable to a tightly integrated partner solution rather an endless wait for SAP functionality. The Chemicals IBU thus wants to develop and grow an ecosystem for the chemicals industry that should provide value to its customers, partners, and SAP. Indeed, the chemicals unit is one of the first within SAP to pilot SAP s Industry Value Network (IVN) program.
