Usability
Poor usability leads to irritation and fatigue and it has an adverse impact on the usage experience. In an on-line shopping web site, it can lead to loss of revenues. Poor usability in business applications leads to increased help desk costs. On the other hand, better usability makes our usage experience more fun and can increase productivity. A highly usable on-line shopping web site tempts repeat visits, builds customer loyalty, and increases its revenue-earning potential.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: tools available in the market that help the software engineer develop prototypes rapidly. Many of these tools allow re-usability so that the prototypes developed at the early stages can be used as part of the actual software being developed during the later stages. In other words, the prototypes need not be discarded. Three, screen navigation and workflow could be demonstrated and signed-off before coding actually begins. Here, use could be made of a structured methodology like the Delta Method for

IBI + IBM = EAI
The latest entrant in the race to support IBM's MQSeries Integrator Version 2 is Information Builders (IBI) with its Middleware Technology Group's 'Enterprise Connector for MQSeries Integrator'. The product provides SQL access to over 80 different data sources, and should prove a good fit with MQSI. In addition, IBI has announced support for IBM’s WebSphere Application Server.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: data for e-business success. Market Impact The addition of MQSI Version 2.0 support to the Enterprise Connector product will have a similar effect on the market to that caused by the WebSphere integration. The sheer breadth of data access interfaces will make this product difficult to compete with (when the customer has a heterogeneous environment). According to IBI, the integrated product simplifies the process of developing message flows, and can reduce the time, effort, and cost associated with

OS SmackDown!
In the latest escalation in the battle between Windows and Linux, directions on how to replace each with the other have been published on the Web by their respective champions.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: disk drive, of course.) Market Impact Alone, these documents will have minimal market impact, except to provide fodder for the pros/antis on both sides to complain about the other and their tactics. Operating system market growth will not be affected by these pieces. Regarding the individual OSes, there are three likely reactions from those who are actually following this mini soap opera: (1) Who cares? ; (2) Boy, I m so angry at their tactics, I m going to show them by picking the other OS , or (3)

What is SRFM?
The planning, execution and partner collaboration processes of nearly all companies today are driven by a

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: experience, or from the market information currently available to sales, marketing, and procurement. In contrast, point forecast systems are only able to capture a single best guess . Information about the range of potential outcomes—clearly critical and valuable—is excluded from core systems as a result, forcing informal manual processes to attempt to cover it. The Core of SRFM Two processes form the core of SRFM, both of which are built on supply and demand range forecast foundations. The

Dell Drops WebPC
Dell Computer Corporation has decided to drop its 'WebPC' appliances, with somewhat less fanfare than was created for its November, 1999, announcement.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: companies a bill for market research services. User Recommendations Business users will have moderate interest in this announcement, from the aspect of a longer-term avenue being closed. (If Dell were successful in the consumer space, they reasonably could be expected to move into the corporate space, etc. etc.) Clearly, they can no longer include the WebPC on the short list of appliances. Corporate users should investigate offerings from Compaq (iPAQ), HP (e-Vectra) and IBM (NetVista) if they decide

Selecting a PLM Vendor
PLM enterprise applications should not be selected in a vacuum. The needs and requirements of multiple departments and even business partners must be represented in the documented requirements and also on the selection team, which should attempt to examine different functions and methods involved in critical areas.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: variety of merchandise to market for satisfying ever-changing consumer demand, and amid the increase of custom-made products. Hence, the enterprises that consider product development a core competency should investigate PLM immediately to maintain their leadership in this area. Other companies should see PLM as a necessary requirement to maintain parity with competitors. However, one lesson learned from past experiences is that PLM enterprise applications should not be selected in a vacuum. The needs and

Net Woes for NetWare
Novell warned financial analysts of lower-than-expected revenues for the second quarter of 2000, as sales declined. This doesn’t bode well for NetWare.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: end of the week. Market Impact NetWare isn t selling like it used to, and Novell s had a hard time seeing that. PC Week reported that Novell s internal sales forecasts were off by $10 million a week in March and April 2000. Novell is trying to transition to being a software vendor for e-business. They ve developed some good products - their eDirectory is regarded as best-of-breed for enterprise/e-business directories. [See TEC s article: Novell Uses XML, LDAP, NDS to Manage AD, IOS, etc. ] But it s

From CIO to CEO?
The step from Chief Information Officer to Chief Executive Officer seems like it should be simple, but few manage to take it. Sure you’ve managed a budget, engaged in strategic planning, and saved the company a bundle of money. Experience like that just gets you in the game – your ace-in-the-hole is something you didn’t train for.

MARKET RESEARCH PROPOSAL: sales, finance, engineering, and marketing. You will find a smattering of General Counsels, manufacturing people, and even an HR person, but no CIOs. Why not? One easy answer is that boards of directors do not understand and value technical issues. Easy but incorrect. If that were true, engineers would never become CEOs. Another answer: People who handle larger or more strategic budgets (sales, finance) are more likely to get promoted. But in today s world, the IT budget is one of the largest around, and

Mobilizing Change
It's not news that people are resistant to change. Inertia, one of the rules of the universe, applies to people as well as to objects. Many organizations, seeking to improve performance, have come unstuck by under-estimating the amount of resistance that will be offered by people. This article presents a method of mobilizing change that takes the resistance to change into account.
