Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

J.D. Edwards - A Collaboration Thought Leader Or A Disguised ERP Follower? Part 1: About J.D. Edwards

Like most of its peers, J.D. Edwards is hoping to rebound by focusing on Internet collaboration and extended-ERP applications. The company has also differentiated itself from competitors by embedding Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) into its OneWorld product. While J.D. Edwards' move into the EAI arena is indisputably risky, we commend its determination to bite the bullet and include integration systems into the core product offering. However, we also believe that managing this large application portfolio, much of which involves partnering or extensive integration and customization, will be cumbersome. Part 1 presents an overview

Like most of its peers, it is hoping to rebound by focusing on Internet collaboration and extended-ERP applications. However, hoping to differ from its peers, at its FOCUS 2000 annual user group meeting in June 2000, the company announced a new corporate vision expressed in the phrase 'freedom to choose'. In other words, the idea is to take the best of ERP, CRM, eBusiness, and business inte Read More

SAP Backpedals Its SaaS Forays -- By Design or Under Duress?

Let me start this blog post with a huge disclaimer: I have no intentions of wilfully beating up on SAP whatsoever! Sure, the enterprise applications titan has lately been embroiled in an intellectual property lawsuit with archrival Oracle over improper use of support data through its TomorrowNow third-party support (recently discontinued) subsidiary. As if this wasn't enough, SAP is being

As if this wasn't enough, SAP is being sued again, and this time over an allegedly failed software implementation. Namely, in late March, Waste Management Inc. filed suit against SAP with claims of fraud (or gross over-promise, if one wants to sound a bit gentler here ). The plaintiff company claims to have spent a whopping US$100 million fortune impleme Read More

Baan Resurrects Multi-Dimensionally Part 4: Challenges & User Recommendations

Baan's viability is no longer an issue. Baan's rejuvenated management team has done a praiseworthy job of bringing the company back to health while concurrently unveiling a new product release that can compete with the other products in the market. Challenges however remain.

Not to mention Oracle , SAP and PeopleSoft that have unquestionably been further down the CRM road than Baan, and that are occupying high positions in the CRM market measured by the pure CRM revenues. To be fair, Baan's strategy of going after vertical industries, which have been somewhat under-served by CRM vendors, may prove to be beneficial, although mainly to Baan's potential 'greenfield' customers when it comes to implementation from scratch and going live. However, the fact might be that Read More
