Best Practices in Extending ERP: A Buyer’s Guide to ERP versus Best-of-breed Decisions

The trade-off between best-of-breed functionality and ease of integration is no longer so simple. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software continues to expand, blurring the boundaries of core ERP functionality. The three essential factors to consider in ERP versus best-of-breed decisions are functionality, integration, and the ability to upgrade. Find out the questions you need to ask when considering an ERP extension.

Quality Assurance solutions were more likely than other extensions to be purchased from specialty vendors, but still almost two thirds (64%) purchased a module or extension from their ERP vendor. These findings indicate the pendulum is swinging strongly in favor of companies expecting more functionality from their ERP vendors. Those participants indicating they Read More

Selecting ERP for Oil and Gas Industry Contractors and Vendors

Suppliers to the oil and gas industry are under more pressure than ever before to increase quality, collaborate closely with the customer, and take on more project risk. Learn how enterprise resource planning (ERP) helps engineers procure construction companies, equipment fabricators, and service providers to meet the new demands from oil and gas companies. Download this white paper to learn more.

More and more of these equipment manufacturers are expanding their business model beyond simple fabrication and into aftermarket service by selling maintenance contracts, parts or other services for installed systems, turning that product data into an ongoing revenue stream. But this paradigm shift requires supporting technology that goes beyond what the equipment company may currently Read More

Tacton Systems AB

Tacton Systems is a world leader in advanced sales and product configuration. Tacton develops and sells embeddable software for sales and design configuration. Tacton’s solutions redefines how product configuration is managed, making it radically simpler to design, configure and sell complex products online as well as offline. Tacton’s solutions integrate easily with surrounding systems and have standard integrations for many leading e-commerce, ERP, CRM, PDM, PLM, and CAD systems.    Tacton’s Story starts in 1987 when a group of engineers and programmers at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science were doing ground-breaking research in the field of knowledge-based systems, and the application of artificial intelligence to solve industry challenges. The researchers were convinced that there were great gains to be made by applying the principles to the field of product configuration. The research team worked in close collaboration with companies such as Ericsson, ABB, and Alfa Laval. By 1993, the group had developed a configurator for a pilot project that was causing quite a stir. Both the researchers and the Institute saw the commercial potential of what had been developed. After a further five years of prototyping and evaluation, Tacton Systems was formed as a spin-off from the research institute.   Tacton has an impressive customer roster with impressive results gained with the offered technology. Many of the customers are leading industrial manufacturers such as   Siemens, ABB, Scania, Aker and Alfa Laval. Tacton works closely with their customers, large and small, to help them revolutionize their processes, to grow, and to become more competitive.   Today Tacton is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, with customers and resellers across the globe.

Fighting Back: How Product Data Management Can Give You the Competitive Edge

Canadian manufacturers are getting squeezed. Challenged by a rising Canadian dollar, forced to hold the line on prices in the US market, pressured by customer demand for lower prices, better quality, and quicker service, these manufacturers need a way to retain their competitive edge and increase bottom-line profitability. Find out why product data management (PDM) is a solution you can turn to in these challenging times.

pdm contracting  Working with a disparate PDM system, where various aspects of the product design are scattered throughout the enterprise, is one of the leading contributors to a slower production cycle-and one that will surely impact the business's bottom line. Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.
