Innovative Approaches in the Free-for-all World of Value-added Resellers
The universe of existing applications partners is relatively stable; some occasional movement from dropping one product in favor of another occurs naturally

However, instead of letting vendors (including VARs) take charge of the demo and perform their flashy dog and pony shows, the companies should unequivocally insist on vendors showing how their proposed system will help achieve the desired user objectives (see Demonstration Post-mortem: Why Vendors Lose Deals ). Only by a diligent process of evaluation that inc

Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

JD Edwards’ Alliances: Is It Too Much of a Good Thing?

Enterprise application vendor JD Edwards has forged a number of alliances since September 1999 as the company looks to expand the availability of its OneWorld product suite. While the best-of-breed approach has its merits, we believe it invariably leads to additional integration costs and complicates service & support arrangements.

perfect world client  integrations could be a perfect definition of an IT manager's nightmare. Furthermore, J.D. Edwards has to be careful how it manages its alliances with big stars like Siebel and Ariba. In most of its key relationships the partner seems to be more influential and currently has a stronger brand. J.D. Edwards could therefore find it a challenge keeping control of its own destiny. Both Ariba and Siebel have partnerships with its fierce competitors too. Great Plains, for example, points out that its integrati Read More

Thinking Radically: Interview with Transpara’s Michael Saucier and Robert Hylton

It appears that many organizations are rapidly adopting mobile business intelligence (BI), and the technology promises to become a natural component of every BI application in the near future. And this has only been made possible by the hard work of number of software companies over the past several years in establishing the foundation, changing mindsets, and applying new mobile-based techniques

perfect world client  the holy grail of perfect data in one system has only been seen in one place—demos from software companies. The CIOs we see that are the most successful today are the ones putting whatever they have to use immediately and making improvements along the way. Quick, small wins that keep them moving forward (and as a bonus, mobile BI helps them highlight what needs fixing much faster than the big project does). JG. What is your favorite electronic gadget? PLM: A New World of (More) Collaboration and Innovation

It used to be the case that PLM was perceived as being principally about CAD tools and 3D drawings and complex technical specs that no one really understood except the geekiest of PLM geeks. This perception was justified, to an extent. After all, PLM and CAD tools can be complicated, engineers and designers tend to operate in highly specialized environments, and there's a common misconception

SCM Software for Real World Manufacturing: A Case for Mission Critical Use

In an ideal world, we can have an exception free manufacturing operations. And for the most part, it will be a "management by exception" operations with no constraints or bottlenecks to worry about. But in reality manufacturing is all about managing constraints. A lot of constraints! This article discusses the impacts of constraints on manufacturing planning and execution and how a well implemented SCM software can help in overcoming these constraints.

Managing Mobile Devices in a Device-Agnostic World

As the “bring your own device” (BYOD) trend sweeps across the business world, it raises a huge management challenge for many companies. It changes who within an organization gets access to mobility. It also affects the way a business operates, with implications that go far beyond simply IT. BYOD presents new, fundamental questions about security, liability, and cost. Answers depend on two aspects of mobility management: device management policy and the technology used to fulfill and enforce a policy.
