Escaping Spreadsheet Chaos to Drive Business Performance
Spreadsheets inhibit a company’s ability to make real-time decisions. Prone to data entry errors, information delivery delays, and a lack of visibility, spreadsheets ultimately limit your ability to grow. While you can see your current budget, profit, or performance through Excel, you lack the ability to drill down further. Of course, it’s all very well to eliminate spreadsheets, but how are you going to replace them?

Symbian, Microsoft Try to Slap Palm Around
Palm Computing’s PalmPCs will be facing stiff competition from Microsoft and the Symbian consortium, each of which is trying to grab a large share of the handheld PDA (personal digital assistant) market. Palm presently holds the 80% of the market

PERFORMANCE MICROSOFT: heat. At some point, price/performance will surpass brand loyalty as a reason for buying a PDA. Of course, at $199 for a stripped down PocketPC (i.e., no PWord or PExcel ), it is not yet a price sell. Pricing on the PocketPC Professional (where you do get PWord and PExcel) is not set at this time. Perhaps MS will tell the market that the added features in the Professional are actually part of the OS, and therefore will cost no more. The Quartz announcement is potentially more troublesome for Palm and

IBM s Four-CPU Wintel-Based Rack Servers High Performance, High Cost
IBM's four-CPU servers, the Netfinity 5500 M20 and 7000 M10, yield top notch web-focused benchmark figures, but also very high price/performance figures for mainstream applications.

PERFORMANCE MICROSOFT: M10 servers as high performance and high reliability systems, with the focus on web serving. IBM highlights its performance figures for various web-focused benchmarks (see below), which are generally higher than the competition. IBM does not highlight cost, as these systems tend to cost more than the competition (especially in a price/performance context). We expect IBM will reduce cost over the next 3-5 years, to ensure that it wins more bids than just replacing legacy systems and IBM-only customers.
