Since 1996, Air International US (AIUS) has used an outsourced manufacturing strategy instead of maintaining its own facilities. For the first few years

By offering clear visibility into the sources, costs and lead times on which each quote was based, Arena made it much easier for AIUS to react to this dynamic process, obtain new information as needed and prepare updated quotes. Not only did this save time and eliminate confusion throughout the process, it also meant that once a configuration was selected, AIUS could know exactly what was included in that

Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

It’s the Time to Master Your Master Data

A recent blog post CRM for the Finance and Banking Industry – Part 1 by Gabriel Gheorghiu touched on a pain point of many of today’s enterprise IT environments. Due to the inconsistency of customer data amongst different systems in use, the bank employee “asked three or four of her co-workers for help, and took about 15 minutes” to simply change the address of one customer. As a matter of fact

Although urgent MDM needs mostly come from customer data and product data, MDM initiatives in material master data, supplier master data, and even human resources (HR) master data are also seen. As to the future of MDM, my humble opinion is that, one day, today’s MDM may disappear if every piece of data is stored only once but can be accessed conveniently, efficiently, and securely from anywhere by anyone who has Read More

The Challenges of a Business Intelligence Implementation: A Case Study

The University of Illinois provides a good example of extensive integration of its business intelligence (BI) solution and data warehousing environment with its enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution.

rfp case study  through focus groups, the RFP creation and demonstration process, or training initiatives, users were aware of and had a say in the overall process. User input ranged from the needs assessment, to software evaluation choice and user friendliness. On another level, interest was low. Had there been significant interest from the user community (or as an alternative, had interest been developed at the time of the student systems overhaul), interest and general buy-in might have taken place more quickly. When Shortlists Are Too Short, Who's to Blame?

This insightful case study from SageCircle talks about how a vendor almost missed out on a $35M deal because it was left off an RFP shortlist. Although the case study is geared toward software vendors—focusing on the importance of an active analyst relations team—it also illustrates important points applying to software selection projects. Although the case study is geared toward software vendors—focusing on the importance of an active analyst relations team—it also illustrates important points applying to software selection projects. The case study is in some ways a cautionary tale for organizations engaging an analyst firm’s guidance in a software selection. An analyst firm that’s helping develop a shortlist must go to great lengths to ensure that it casts a fair , impartial , and comprehensive net Read More

A Case Study and Tutorial in Using IT Knowledge Based Tools Part 1: Decision Support Discussion

In going through a business decision process for complex technology selections, more and more use is being made of technologically driven processes using Decision support tools and captured knowledge. The use of these systems and the capability to drive a solution from them assumes an ability to accurately express business requirements and business value within these tools. In this article, we explore the marriage of knowledge management and decision support in forming knowledge based selection systems and procedures that can assist in reducing the current appalling record of IT project failures. This is illustrated by the process to select a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

rfp case study  practice of RFI / RFP processes, among other internal organizational procedures, are adequate to the task of selecting complex systems. The record indicates there is much room for improvement. In essence, for complex selections, the human-machine combination has to work together to drive the solution. Both have to be understood and complement each other in the process. It is easy for the human to be overwhelmed, or simply run out of time, and the machine interface and engine to be inadequate to the task. Read More
