Dowling - June 3, 2002 Introduction   To assure flexibility and lasting value, information system designs and product selection must be guided by an architectural plan for infrastructure and applications systems. The Art of architecture design is in extracting business requirements; the Science is translating them into technology solutions. Note : This note first appeared in a column by James F. Architecture-Centered Information Systems In The Manufacturing Domain - Part V - Applying the Methodology

Architecture bridges the semantic gap between the requirements and software. Application software systems must be architected in order to deal with the current and future needs of the business organization. Managing software projects using architecture-centered methodologies must be an intentional step in the process of deploying information systems - not an accidental by-product of the software acquisition and integration process.

science of architecture design  described in the computer science literature. Sufficiency, completeness, and primitiveness - sufficiency means that a component should capture those characteristics of an abstraction that are necessary to permit a meaningful and efficient interaction with the component. Completeness means that a component should capture all relevant characteristics of its abstraction. Primitiveness means that all the operations a component can perform can be implemented easily. It should be the major goal of every Read More

An Improved Architecture for High-efficiency, High-density Data Centers

Globally, data center power and cooling infrastructure wastes more than 60 million megawatt-hours per year that do not contribute usefully to powering IT equipment. This is an enormous financial burden on industry, and is a significant public policy environmental issue. Find out about the principles of a new data center architecture that can be implemented today to dramatically improve the electrical efficiency of your data center.

How to Overcome the Limits of Enterprise Software

Is your enterprise software really making you more competitive? After all, for years you’ve had to make expensive trade-offs between application dependability and manageability—and the sheer computing power required to deliver effortless scalability simply didn’t exist. However, a new type of software environment is successfully and cost-effectively meeting the requirements of today’s most demanding applications.

science of architecture design  With its 200 computer science PhDs and 600+ additional computer scientists, Google can afford to develop and maintain its own custom application fabric. For most other organizations, the right approach is to rely on commercially available and supported application fabric software, which delivers what Google built for itself - a grid that can reliably deliver results in real-time. The purpose of this white paper is to provide an overview of application fabrics and the business and technology advantages Read More

PHP Code Design

Interactive web sites are event-driven. With each user click, a menu selection or keyboard action initiates a thread of execution that runs many lines of code. Many Web projects start as small code snippets gathered from open source sites, but as the web site grows, new developers are added to the mix. Without design and documentation tools, the project can become unmanageable, unreliable, insecure, and costly to expand.

Eco-mode: Benefits and Risks of Energy-saving Modes of UPS Operation

Many newer uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) systems have an energy-saving operating mode known as “eco-mode” or by some other descriptor. Nevertheless, surveys show that few data centers actually use this mode, because of the known or anticipated side effects. Unfortunately, the marketing materials for these operating modes do not adequately explain the cost/benefit tradeoffs. This paper shows that eco-mode provides a reduction of approximately 2% in data center energy consumption and explains the various limitations and concerns that arise from eco-mode use. Situations where these operating modes are recommended and contraindicated are also described.

The Pain and Gain of Integrated EDI Part One: The Pain of Integrated EDI

The real action is in merging the influx of electronically transmitted data with existing information already being processed within the ERP system, and the ensuing challenge is to make sense of this constant flood of information arriving daily in the form of EDI or XML messages.

science of architecture design  Pain and Gain of Integrated EDI Part One: The Pain of Integrated EDI The Pain of Integrated EDI There is more to the best-of-breed versus integrated suite dilemma than mere data synchronization between two disparate enterprise applications. Electronic data interchange (EDI) capability, which for some high-volume industries like automotive suppliers has become a unpleasant required, has been made more dangerous by the level of work that must be dedicated to ensure the accuracy of incoming and outgoing Read More

Comparing the Total Cost of Ownership of SME On-premise Business Management Applications and SAP Business ByDesign

This document analyzes the cost of ownership for a typical on-premise small and medium enterprise (SME) business management system, and compares it to the cost of an equivalent SAP Business ByDesign implementation. It uses a mixture of different on-premise systems rather than any single vendor's product. Although there are many similarly equipped business management products available, they all compete closely on price.
