Connecting Low-cost Servers to SAN
Most IT managers have proven, cost-effective ways to increase the return on investment (ROI) of existing infrastructures—that is, storage area networks (SANs). SANs provide high-availability storage to servers within corporate infrastructures. Connecting low-cost servers to SANs makes business sense, as it dramatically reduces the cost-per-server connection to well below $100 (USD).

Compaq’s Photon Comes into the Light
After much anticipation, Compaq’s version of a 1U-high (one 'rack unit') server is finally ready to ship.

SERVERS RACK: up to thousands of servers with a virtual Web-based tool from anywhere in the world. Other options meet a range of data center environment requirements such as desktop stackable solutions, third-party racks and telco rack solutions. Market Impact Although Network Engines, Inc. (NEI) and IBM (which currently resells a Network Engines-based system) were the first companies to ship a 1U/2CPU system, (Ref. Accelerating Enterprise Insights: 2013 IOUG In-Memory Strategies Survey
Today’s organizations are becoming increasingly digital, giving rise to trends such as the proliferation of application servers, the rapid expansion in the number of end users, and growth in data volumes and types. Meanwhile, the performance of database systems is struggling to keep pace. Enter in-memory technologies, which offer a cost-effective way to increase the speed of data processing by orders of magnitude. This document presents the results of a new survey about the in-memory technology usage and considerations of 323 data managers and professionals who are part of the Independent Oracle Users Group. To find out who is considering in-memory technology, who has adopted it so far, and how organizations are using in-memory technology, read the survey results.

@Home Scans Own Customers
@Home has been scanning their own customers to see if they are running news or webservers. If you're one of their spam happy customers, cut it out. If you've been a past victim of spam coming through their networks, hopefully some good will come out of this.

SERVERS RACK: running news or web servers. This is likely a response to the USENET Death Penalty that was called against the company for the amount of spam coming from its networks. What this means is that the systems and network administrators working at @Home are using what is known as a network scanner to look for people sending unsolicited junk mail, a lot of which is often pornographic. Specifically, they are poking TCP ports 80 and 119 with a network scanner looking for HTTP proxies and NNTP proxies

Rackmount Server Sales Surge
Rack-optimized servers are reported to have increased their quarter-over-quarter unit sales by over 50%

SERVERS RACK: sales of rack-optimized Intel-based servers increased over 55% from 4Q99 to 1Q00, compared with a 2% decline for the overall Intel server market. In the meantime, major Intel server vendors are planning to increase their rack-optimized products offerings in the coming months. Market Impact This trend has been obvious for a long time, so we re surprised it took the market so long to catch up to the pundits. Levity aside, we have been anticipating a shift from a pedestal-centric model to a rack-centric

Scaling SAN Connectivity on VMware
VMware and blade servers have taken the IT world by storm. Virtual server use has grown over 50 percent, and blade servers account for 12.5 percent of all new servers. Can you incorporate them into your existing frameworks? Yes. Routers can scale server numbers with virtual interfaces, and with fibre channel storage area network (SAN) connectivity, you can reduce testing and development costs in VMware environments.
