Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

RFID--A New Technology Set to Explode? Part One: RFID Technology

For retailers and the other vertical industries, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags present enormous opportunities to improve supply chain operations, since real-time inventory control, tracking, and alerting capabilities could be very important advantages of RFID. As tagged inventory goes through ports, terminals, freight forwarders, and into a distribution center, the RFID tag should provide near real-time visibility of an item's whereabouts at all times.

Namely, the RFID Accelerator is designed to enable companies to meet the demands of the large retailers without replacing their existing infrastructure. The application provides agents to collect and verify RFID tag information, retrieve related inventory data, and pass this combined information to the retailers in advanced shipping notices (ASNs), which will provide the pallet and case RFID-based information that retailers Wal-Mart and Target will require. Why Employee Performance Management Technology Matters to CEOs

While the board has no business telling management which employee performance management (EPM) system to use, it does have the right to ensure an effective system is in place. EPM is one of the central tools for directing and monitoring activities right across an organization. Employing this system will ensure that any goals set out by management are clearly visible to everyone up the chain of command—including the CEO.

technology case studies  software solutions. Does EPM technology work? Will I Really See A ROI? The numbers tell the tale of the efectiveness of EPM. Amcor Sunclipse, a nationwide distribution company headquartered in Southern California, reports that with their paper-based system only 10% of performance evaluations were completed on time. After their EPM implementation they had a 90% on-time record. The earlier metaphor of EPM as a well-oiled engine is not just a tidy image. A system that is on time only 10% of the time is an Read More

Voting Technology: An Evaluation of Requirements and Solutions

The issues created by the use of punch card ballots, an obsolete technology, during the recent US Presidential election are similar to the ones that businesses confront every day when dealing with technological change. It is therefore instructive to examine voting technology issues in the way that most businesses would approach an important information technology decision.

technology case studies  evidence of their vote. Technology Drawbacks Enticing as these possibilities may be, none are without drawbacks. For instance, all electronic solutions require a power supply. Provision must be made for a portable backup power supply at each polling place in the event of a power failure. Paper balloting procedures must be in place as a backup in case this equipment fails. Choosing the right client/server architecture presents a second issue. Three basic architectural approaches are available, each having Read More

EvolveWare’s S2T Technology

To date, the best option for discovering and extracting information from software applications has primarily been manual, with automation tools serving in support. These initiatives are tedious, long-term, and high-risk. Companies try to lower monetary cost by outsourcing such projects. However, the time to completion and risks remain unchanged at best. The solution? Automated documentation and transformation of software applications.

How Many Napkins Have to Die Needlessly? A Case for Business Architecture

Architecture is a description of how things go together. Once we know what our Business Architecture is, we can design an Information Technology Architecture to compliment it. Without a clearly stated architecture, there is a good chance that things will be put together wrong.

It must be functional to serve two constituencies. First, the business manager's processes will be enabled and optimized through systems built on its capabilities. Second, information technologists must build in compliance with architectural guidelines. This balance of operational vision and constrained realization is the measure of good architecture.
