Secure Your Search Engine
Webservers running the search engines are vulnerable to a serious security compromises. Without careful implementation, user passwords and logins can be stolen, and the entire server could be brought to its knees by hackers.

WEBERDEV: any file on the webserver, including the password file which contains the root password. Once you are logged into a UNIX server with the root password, you can do anything you want to the server including assigning new passwords to users, stealing confidential information, inserting viruses and trojan horses, and blowing away entire filesystems. If you have a backend database on your webserver, this could be a database administrator s worst nightmare. Market Impact Hopefully this security vulnerabilit

Counting Website Traffic
Knowing how many people visit your website can help you improve the site and increase revenues. Counting them can be easy or accurate, but not both.

WEBERDEV: request files from the webserver is irrelevant. Impressions are as easily available as hits. Every hit is recorded in the webserver s log file. (See: Web Logs Tell (Almost) All ). To count the impressions it is only necessary to know how to distinguish pages from images. Pages are usually named with extensions of htm, html, asp, or cgi. (The extensions asp and cgi indicate different forms of program that are used to generate page content dynamically). Note that the use of Java servelets and JavaScript

DOJ Keeps Low Profile on Curador; Protect Your IIS Server Today!
After insisting the perpetrator of the February Distributed Denial of Service attacks would be caught and punished, a month later, the Department of Justice, and Janet Reno, are keeping a low profile on the antics of an altogether different, but in many ways more serious, cyber attack. Take Remote Data Service precautions today. Here's how.

WEBERDEV: been retrieved from a webserver by a client, it becomes static and can no longer be manipulated without re-establishing a second connection to the database on the backend of the webserver. RDS fixes this limitation allowing disconnected objects to be cached, which enables the data to be dynamically updated and used for further programming. With RDS, you can move data from a server to a client, manipulate the data on the client, and return updates to the server through a single connection. However, with RD

CryptoSwift Takes Rainbow Revenues Up 620%
Rainbow Technologies' revenue for its Internet Performance and Security division is up 620% from last year. This increase is due primarily to revenues brought in by its CryptoSwift product line.

WEBERDEV: being performed by the webserver CPU, and moves them to the CryptoSwift board. Without the extra load of encryption parsing, a webserver can typically perform 50-90% faster. Market Impact As e-commerce expands, the market for website acceleration technologies will continue to grow. Rainbow Technologies stock soars over leading market indicators. The best way to find out if the acceleration technologies are worth the money, is to do the math and find out how many dollars in revenue you are losing by not u

The AS/400 Takes You Securely Where You Want to Go
This article on the built-in security features of the AS/400 system originally appeared in the Midrange Computing’s Showcase Magazine, June 2000.

WEBERDEV: PC viruses. The Ideal Webserver The AS/400 was built with compiled C binaries with no interpreted scripts making it extremely resilient to CGI subversion, and ideal for webhosting. If configured correctly, from a security perspective you can t go wrong using AS/400s to build your eCommerce site. With the recent outbreaks of system security compromises, we expect the AS/400 to continue its strong showing in the world of Internet commerce.   comments powered by Disqus Demystifying SAP Solution Manager | Cl

Geller: With this architecture it s easy for us to add additional servers. When we need to we ll add round robin routing for balance. TEC: Where do your servers live? Traffic Audits Make Strange Bedfellows: Part I - The Why’s and What’s of Auditing
Have you heard the one where the Director of Product Marketing, the CIO and the auditor are found together in a small conference room? Couldn’t happen, you say? Au contraire! With traffic being the lifeblood of an e-commerce site the Marketing crew knows that the traffic numbers are going to be audited. And they look to the CIO to make sure that the numbers pass muster. If there’s a problem with the numbers, the CIO may be blamed.

WEBERDEV: probably come from the webserver s traffic logs, sometimes supplemented by your user database, the numbers about actual ad impressions come from the logs of the adserver (see How to Serve an Ad: Better to Buy Than to Build ). The number of clickthroughs can be determined by the advertisers. However, you will need to count these yourself as well, to protect against advertisers claiming rebates because the clickthrough numbers were lower than expected. With all these complex numbers, and thousands of dollar
