WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: What is SRFM? What is SRFM? Blake Johnson - April 23, 2004 Read Comments Introduction The planning, execution and partner collaboration processes of nearly all companies today are driven by a plan , itself typically part forecast, part performance target. Together, the plan and these core processes are at the heart of almost everything a company does—from MRP output, to commitments to customers and suppliers, to internal performance targets and the bonuses that depend on them, to the financial

Usability
Poor usability leads to irritation and fatigue and it has an adverse impact on the usage experience. In an on-line shopping web site, it can lead to loss of revenues. Poor usability in business applications leads to increased help desk costs. On the other hand, better usability makes our usage experience more fun and can increase productivity. A highly usable on-line shopping web site tempts repeat visits, builds customer loyalty, and increases its revenue-earning potential.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: is expected to do what it is expected to do. Faced with a clean-slate during the stage of defining requirements, users are barely able to define the What aspects accurately. Without actually seeing the software, they are just not in a position to define the How aspects. For example, a business user who has not yet seen a to-be-developed customer order screen may at best be able to specify what pieces of data he or she would like to see in a customer order screen. It is virtually impossible for the

OS SmackDown!
In the latest escalation in the battle between Windows and Linux, directions on how to replace each with the other have been published on the Web by their respective champions.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: OS SmackDown! OS SmackDown! R. Krause - January 12, 2000 Read Comments Event Summary Recently, Microsoft published instructions on how to remove Linux OS and install Windows 2000/NT4 on the newly-freed-up disk drive. Not to be outdone, Linux-philes have countered by publishing instructions on how to remove a Windows OS and replace it with Linux. To close the circle, Paul Ferris, Editor at Linux Today, highlighted the silliness by publishing his own mostly-joking piece on how to uninstall both Windows and

SAP Details CRM Plans
On November 9, SAP outlined its Customer Relationship Management plans in preparation for its product delivery next month. In December the company is expected to launch a telesales application and Internet portal that it hopes will lay the foundation for the full CRM suite rollout early next year.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: SAP Details CRM Plans SAP Details CRM Plans P.J. Jakovljevic - November 17, 1999 Read Comments Event Summary CRM will become our major driver for business revenue, SAP chairman Hasso Plattner said on November 9 at a briefing on SAP s front-office strategy. It is a heady statement for the company, whose forays into CRM over the past year have been troubled at best, with significant delays in application delivery. Yet the company has stated that it would be rolling out its crucial front-office components

A Matter of Trust
When important information is withheld, it leads to enormous inefficiencies or even disasters in the supply chain. Trust is needed to streamline decision making and interactions in the supply chain. But, in spite of what

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: But, in spite of what Kumbaya Collaborationists preach, there are very real and serious risks with sharing information, as shown in table 1 below. Not everyone is trustworthy. Before the virtualization of the enterprise and the globalization of the supply chain, it was not so hard. The boundaries of your domain of trust aligned pretty clearly with the boundaries of the old vertically integrated enterprise. You just had to keep all that confidential information safe inside your company and you were

Oracle Product Showdown!
I'm Larry Blitz, editor of Technology Evaluation Centers’ (TEC) Vendor Showdown series. Today’s Vendor Showdown is an encore presentation of a Showdown that was originally published last September. It compares two popular Oracle enterprise solutions—JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and E-Business Suite—head to head.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: you need to know. What they do provide is a basic, high-level view of vendors general strengths and weaknesses right out of the box. However, the fact is that few businesses, if any, can use an enterprise solution straight out of the box. Your company has distinct needs and priorities that need to be supported by any enterprise solution you adopt. Given that out-of-the-box rankings rarely, if ever, reflect the real-world needs of an organization, and that the rankings can shift depending on what areas

The Power of One
The typical mid-market company that has roughly $350 million in annual revenue, has not fully automated its business processes, and would gladly give up its legacy systems if everything could work from one server, and give the executives the information they need in the process. Another opinion in the dilemma - the one-stop shop versus best-of breed concept.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: as they would experience what is known as consolidation. In fact, this is something that is already happening and began shortly after Y2K. Even in the most talked about CRM space, we saw companies like Siebel acquire eleven point solution companies to become a CRM Suite. Although Tom Siebel won t admit the value of an all-in-one solution, he clearly saw the value in an all-in-one CRM solution. It is interesting that Siebel now offers the Universal Application Network (UAN), which meets the key

ERP II Demystified
As organizations prepare for their next ERP version upgrade, they find themselves trying to make sense of a new iteration that disrupts the traditional understanding and thinking about ERP. ERP II requires organizations to transform from a focus on internal resource optimization to a new focus on process integration and external collaboration. To help organizations make sense of this new iteration, we look at why ERP II has come about, how it differs from ERP, and how it promises to change the way organizations do business in the future.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: a business perspective. So what is ERP II? How do we define it? ERP II Defined ERP II is the iteration that adapts ERP to the Internet-based world of today and tomorrow through changes in functionality, technology, and architecture. The most apparent change from ERP to ERP II is a change in focus from one that is totally enterprise-centric and preoccupied with internal resource optimization and transactional processing to a new focus on process integration and external collaboration. Simply put, all exist

Retail Systems: A Primer
The core components of a retail information system are inventory management, inventory optimization, revenue management, sales management, and reports and inquiries. Non-core components can include financial, supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, and warehouse management systems.

WHAT IS APPLIED RESEARCH: Retail Systems: A Primer Retail Systems: A Primer Caroline Lam - March 13, 2006 Read Comments Introduction Although many people recognize technology terms such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) or supply chain management (SCM), RMM and MMS are acronyms that lack such widespread awareness. Moreover, the terms retail merchandise management system (RMM) and merchandise management system (MMS) likely have little more market recognition than their acronyms. Despite their relative anonymity, these systems,
